    New tires for trackday

Typically dealers will tell you to go easy for 50 - 100 miles on new tires on the street. Obviously many run brand new tires at the track. My question is running brand new street tires at the track (Diablo Rosso II). What is the best break-in for TTD track day? Run the red group follow the leader then do an easy first open session to scrub them in? Thanks.

I'd ride the FTL session the way you would normally ride a FTL session(slowly, progressively coming up to speed), and then not worry about them after that. That will scrub them in just fine, and allow you to get used to the feeling of new tires.

Thanks, was wondering if I should put a quick 25 miles or so on the street first, but would prefer to get to just prep the bike saturday morning, let dealer put on the tires, and load it in the box van.

it's more the getting heat into them rather than "scrubbing them in." getting them hot will get the grease off of them or whatever dat ish is

Is it one shot of heat in 5 laps, or a couple heat/cold cycles that get the greasies out? Did you get to the ride today, or layed up with the shoulder?

What you are focusing on is removing the "mold release agent" that leaves a shiny surface on a new tire. A single 5-lap session will be fine for this purpose. The key is not to abruptly push any new tire too hard the very first left-hand turn or very first right-hand turn. Your goal is to gradually increase your lean angle over several left & right turns. Having tire warmers on the tire helps gain traction sooner, but just riding 2-3 laps will get the tires up to temp and help improve traction once the tires get scuffed in.

"Scrubbing in" a new tire entails rolling around on it and slowly working your way to the edges of the tire. You can literally do it in a single lap. It has nothing to do with heat. You're literally scrubbing the surface of the tire so that any release agent to get it out of the tire mold gets scrubbed off.

Getting HEAT into a tire so that it gets up to proper operating temp is another subject. Hard acceleration and braking while straight up and down flexes the carcass and that's what heats it up.

1 warm up lap then 1 warmer lap and then pin it.

is it Michelin that doesn't use a mold release anymore? not sure about any of the other brands but I bet they all use far less of it then they used to.

just do the ftl and be smooth. there's no set number of miles that needs to be done.

Remember...racers often put a fresh tire on the bike and go race... using the warmup lap for scrub in.

Every lap after the 2nd one, the tire has less grip!

You should be able to scrub in a tire in any trackday group - since everyone should be taking it easy on the first lap or two anyway. Even if you have tire warmers, it's a wise move to take a sighting lap before really wicking it up.

Thats what I do. I try and run close to race pace. Maybe a few seconds off what I Ill do during the race. Never had a problem with tires being slick but they do come off warmers. Without warmers I would certainly take it easier only because they are cold. I would brake hard while straight up and down to flex the front and accelerate hard while straight up to flex the rear.

At a trackday after the ftl session youll be fine.
