So with the XR coming around and it having SM rims... I went thru my street gear
13 yo Arai helmet.... Toss
Tecknic violator gloves 15yo... to be tossed? as they have no wear at all
Alpinestars leather jacket..... been down once 20 yo?.... toss?
Sidi vert II boots .... toss??
Either way... any recs on a local (wilmington) cycle shop to get a new lid at least? Last time I went thru Duncan's shop in Waltham ( is he loudbeard now?)
Is Arai still $800-1000 and fitsthe oddball head I have? Any other latest and greatest Makes that are out there?

hmmmm......
I'd keep everything, except the lid, if it's still in good shape.
Go up to Seacoast and get fitted for a new lid if you want to stay localish. If your Arai was a Profile check out Shoei GT Air. It's not as long oval but I can still wear it all day.

I would keep the old gear too, especially the jacket. They dont really go bad and a good fitting jacket is hard to find. I have many and lend/give them away when asked. I find $50 used dainese jackets very hard to say no too so i have piles of them, i dont mind donating the odd one to a good cause.
Personally if the gloves, jacket and boots still fit I'd wear them. The helmet I'd replace. I love the fit and comfort of an arai I can't bring myself to spend 700$ on a helmet with tbat stupid 2nd outside visor they use to block the sun. Why they can't or won't do a transitions lens is crazy.
there are some deals here. https://www.motorcyclegear.com/ i would definitely replace the Arai!
This is so true about the GT-Air. I was an Arai Profile and got a new GT-Air when it was time for a new lid. Now, I am back to a Signet-X (long oval). I wonder if the GT-Air II is also more oval than the other Shoeis.
I agree with the above statement. Aside from the lid, everything else is still usable. I second seacoast - i love that dealership.
BTW, I got a transitions pinlock from Europe for my Arai Signet-X for about $70. While not the same as a dark shield, it looks a million bucks better than the 2nd outside visor. Check out

As for reasonably priced helmets, look for the HJC RPHA line as they are top notch and often on sale on motorcyclegear.com They are almost at the same level as Arai, but have a specific and less long oval head shape
I went into Seacoast looking for a newer Arai due to track age-out. Left with a lighter-weight and better-fitting Shoei after an extensive fit session. Letting fit be the guide was the correct result; highly recommended.

My go-to site for gear reviews is webbikeworld.com. They provide really good info on fit, noise, and weight when they review helmets, for example.
Go fast. Have fun. Repeat.
good input... I'll hit up the jacket , gloves boots with some leather conditioner to keep in shape.
Helmet Wise I'll head up to seacoast to get "fitted" and see if they have something I like. rather get fitted again and spend money at a local shop vs the net.
but.. if using the net and I can return for "free" I'll do that
I loved my old Arai Quantum f and then went to the the Arai quantum II was was almost as good. but not.
but.....
Any input on those hybrid dirt/ street helmets?
I"m past doing 500 mile days so long term comfort is not my need.. its more short bursts dual sport work, 2 hours here. etc..
or are they the worst of both worlds or best of both worlds?
hmmmm......
Scorpion 950 is one of those helmets. It’s decent but a little loud for the highway. Fairly light
I have a Bell MX9 Adventure mips helmet. It’s pretty lightweight and breathes real well, definitely not a cold-weather lid. The peak visor removes easily without tools if you want to run it in “street” mode. I always miss the drop-down sun visor from my Shoei GT-air though.
I started with a MX-9, but it still got hot on the slow technical stuff for me. And it's loud, and not as feature laden as I wanted.
I then moved to a Nexx XD-1 which I absolutely love. It fits my noggin perfectly, is premium enough for my purposes, is decently quiet until you hit higher speeds. With the right airflow mitigation high speed riding is not a problem with the peak, at least not noticeable worse than my old Bell RS-1. Last I checked you can get the older XD-1 for sale at Walmart for $200 (it retailed at ~$500 in the US). I paired this helmet with a set of 100% googles for more technical rides (goggles can be used with the visor attached) and hot days, but use the visor for everything above a crawl.
I plan on replacing it with a X.Wed 2 (the newer version) at some point, primarily because it flows even more air and made some small improvements.

I use the MX9 Adventure with a transitions shield and love it. I initially got it for commuting as the setting sun made it a real challenge to see properly when lane splitting but I just got back from a 650 mile dual sport trek through Baja Mexico. While I had the face shield up during anything technical (never did put on my goggles), the helmet was worth its weight in gold when it was cold and downpouring compared to the MX style the others were wearing.
At any rate, this style of helmet is not my choice when doing any extended highway as the peak catches wind, especially when turning your head at speed. Maybe I should try the Nexx mentioned above.
I am not Duncan Moto...Ted Duncan, I’m just Duncan. To further confuse things I bought a trailer from bergs years ago with a DuncanMoto.com sticker.
I went to MMI I know what Im doing here chief
heading up today to get a new lid to Seacoast...
the recs are for the Derry location correct?
hmmmm......
It's, as far as I know, the only location.
Helmets and car seats don't "go bad" after a certain date, but new ones get safer and safer every year. That's why you should stop using it. You don't need to toss them but you can't really justify giving them to anyone due to this myth. Something like "here, your life isn't worth anything made after 2010"

If you are going to trashing the helmet could you give it to me? I teach MSF and could use it for the classroom portion as a prop for educatiom.
