A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. - John Stuart Mill
Perhaps you could stagger the timing of the event, so people wanting to participate in the "class/course" part would register, pay and arrive earlier. The remainder of the event could start after the class was underway thereby eliminating some of your crowd and showmanship issues. Perhaps.

I think the dealers are on the fence if they scream safety they may cut into sales.
SOME kind of trainer Gymkhana event would be educational and fun

Hi Ken,
I was at the meeting with Degsy and the RMV. I'd be more than happy to help in any way possible.
Although I like the idea, I doubt this is how it would go. The squidliest of squids go to a stunt shows then practice wheelies and stoppies on our streets for the rest of the season. Do we really want these squidliest of squids practicing dragging a knee on our streets? We all know they're not going to the track.
That said, I think Ken's idea is great. It just needs to be done realizing that there are riders that will try this at home and structure what they see accordingly.
+1, I'd be happy to help out.... I may even have my MSF Rider Coach cert. by the time it happens...
The same sort of idea was broached when Degs & that crew met up w/ Eugene and I think it would do some good... The Cruiser crowd my have poker runs, but the "squids" have shows... the target group isn't exactly all that hard to track down.

Seems to me like you're making excuses as to not help a demographic that could use a helping hand.
Did you take the MSF course? The cones they use are very small & AREN'T slippery at all... and why couldn't we just turn away those that aren't wearing long pants & closed toed shoes. It's pretty simple, really.

The perfect place to do something is at the track .
With safety mostly in place for an event like this , it would be an easier place to " customize " to an event of this type .
Problems would be , cost ?
Another thought , would be a large school parking lot ?
Perfect place to spread the word would be motorcycle nights where most hang .
Steve and Heather would be a good source .
just some random thoughts .......
I like the idea ...

It seems to me that Bayside has enough parking lot space. So does Wonderland.
I'll disagree a bit. The guys who go to a stunt show and then go home to do power wheelies up and down their residential street to practice, while foolish, also have no other viable option. There are no "stunt days" where they can go learn and practice those skills, maybe realizing as many trackday goers do how everything has a time and a place and reserving those skills for the proper one. A guy who is shown another type of skillful riding and then told he too can learn that, just go to any number of easily accessible trackdays, just might do that. I've really seen some riders this past year who I would have pegged as the kind of guys you'd never see get to the track not only do trackdays, but in some cases get hooked and get track only bikes. Education does have the potential to change people's actions.

Great feedback, all.
You've brought up many of the concerns voiced by the organizers.
The most viable option is to offer an Experienced Rider Course that is customized to sportriders. This has been done successfully in the past (with SRNE) and seemed to benefit every one who participated.
We might be able to use the sportbike course offered for the military.
Finding a parking lot that is centrally located and where the owner is moto-friendly is always a trick. If anybody has further suggestions, please post them up or PM me with solid contact info.
We'll be working on this over the winter so these events can start to happen early in the season.
Seekonk is the best existing range location, for sure.

Ken,
I would bet that a place like wonderland dog track would be willing to host such an event. I know they do a couple of driver car events in their lot every year.
This sounds like something I would like to get involved in so don't hesitate to contact me.

SRNE. Those were interesting days. Thanks for the trip back in time, Chris. Don't you just love that mustache.![]()
Joe is one of the big players in the MA Rider Ed program, so I'm sure he will do what he can to help with locations.
Wonderland sounds like another possibility.
I'll keep you all posted about how the project is progressing.
Chiming in late. This is a difficult but very worthwhile project. It will be a challenge to make it educational, safe and fun.
One suggestion for the program is tips and training for riding with passengers.
I think advanced riders making demonstrations along with video tutorials and demonstrations would be very usefull tools. Freezeframe video's showing good and bad technique?
