I make passes on double yellow if I am able to safely make the pass and if making the pass will substantially make my ride move along. I think there is nothing more tacky than making a pass only to have the person behind you for the next 10 mles. Safety comes first though, only make it if it's safe.
you would do that in MA?Quote:

I never pass on a double yellow. I just ride between the two lines and have my own lane all to myself.
My old rule was that I didn't do it while riding alone. Somehow, riding with other bikes seems to "make" it ok.
Just when I think that I'll never do it while riding solo. I ended up doing it yesterday. I was behind a tractor cab who was doing 35 in a 45. I was not going to follow this yoyo for 10 miles doing 10 mph less than the speed limit.
So, I waited for a LONG, clear section, since the entire way was double yellows, and made my pass. Since he was moving so slowly, it didn't take long at all.
If I'm travelling at a good clip and it would take a long time to pass, I'd be less inclined to take the chance.
Technically, yes; usually, no.Quote:

My riding in MA is mostly highway or urban. The former being a non-issue of pasing and the latter not safe or practical.
I am much more likely to make a pass up in the White Mtns, although last time I did a 120 mi. loop towards Dartmouth, I generally waited for a dotted yellow.
The problem comes when there SHOULD be a dotted yellow and there isn't. Also ppl in NH seem to be much more cognizant and tolerant of bikes vs. MA.

i'll start trouble later. :twofinger: :)
Liter Bike
Every 50 yards is an adequate passing zone.
I passed a few cars on the double yellow on 122 in MA yesterday.
In my Honda Civic.
Yes, they were that slow. :twofinger:
Look what passing on double yellows did for Billy Lane...
Hopefully his next biker build off will be from a Jail Cell:mad:
I get waved by often on backroads in RI, some very angrily, and I don't even ride their ass... I've only ever once passed on a double yellow and it was because the car was creeping down the road at like 15 mph.
The benefits just usually do not outweigh the risks in this situation.
Ok I didn't plan to but I did this weekend.Quote:
