I know for a fact a VFR couldn't keep up with you and your loud ass harl...uh....buell in the twisties.


BTW: this time last year I was rocking a chromed out sporty 1200. Admittedly I miss the stump pulling grunt, but the VFR is a much better ride.

Thats nice. I´m sure everybody knows EXACTLY what I meant by "performance"(quarter mile, top speed, fuel economy, braking and stopping capabilities).

had a bike that was both a harley and sportbike as a Buell XB.... didn't do too bad keeping up when I had it. Harley Heart in a street fighter frame/suspension. Guess that just makes me confused

I feel that way about my Confederate. it has a "Harley" based motor and a "sportbike" type frame. There are bikes faster, but it will give just about anything a run to 100. There are bikes that stop better, but back down to "0" it'll do it with the best. I'm not sure of top speed, because at 4000rpm in 5th I'm doing 130 (and I'm a wuss). ok, most bikes beat me in fuel economy, It's been a while since I've checked but I think it's about 28mpg.


What bothers me more than the "wave" (or lack of one) is the semi-recent trend of not helping a "biker" on the side of the road. I know that I'm old at 41, but when I started riding in the '80s (before many of you were born), no one on a bike would ride by another bike on the side of the road.

Okay Guys, this will probably lift some eyebrows. I just need to clear some shit up. Harleys... what is the deal with this? I come from a country with a lot of motorcycles, even with our short summers there is the "love" for this sport. Don´t get me wrong, with a population on only 5 million people we have a lot of motorcycles crotch rockets nakeds and Harleys and other customs. We all wave to a fellow biker passing because it´s just the decent thing to do. We are all bikers. We do not pay attention to what make or model the bike is. As I said, we are all bikers. Harleys are not rare in Finland, we probably have more per capital than here in the states. The only group of people you DON´T wave to is the 1% bikers, also known as Hells Angels or the 1% of bikers the American motorcycle association does not approve of....
So what is the deal with American Harley riders?

The thing is your playing the same game on a different ball court. Back in 1998 I was in Uppsala, Sweden where I met up with some of my friends that I had met a couple years back in PA and we made a trip down to Monaco, Spain.(some friends, lent me a K1200 for the trip!) It was one of the most memorable trips of my life. The 4 week trip across europe was such an eye opener. The things I did not know about European riders... must say; The best and safest riders in the world are Europeans. The finn, Heikki told me about the complexity in getting a license in Finland, 20 hours of theory, 20 hours of riding lessons, mandatory. Plus you can't just get on superbike after this, first year under 11kW, second and third year under 25kW after that it's up to you. Starting off with a bike that is suitable for your riding experience is key. No wonder you guys can ride!
The things I learned where the differences in culture of which you described in the first post. The harley issue is in fact different in Europe. The "wave" does not leave anybody out, but like you said, you don't wave to the HA's as they do not wave or like being waved to. California was the place of birth for this, but Europe is were they evolved to become ruthless fu#*ers.
You'll just have to adapt to our ways. Good luck with that.

I am almost certain that my XB12SS had a much better power/weight ratio to your VFR and handled up there w/ the other sportbikes Ive ridden.... so what are your "standards" in performance? Oh yeah, I wave to everyone (even people driving nice cages...) so sue me. I guess ignorance is bliss

I don't think this comparison was really fair. If your Bike was fitted with a 800cc sportster power plant, it would be funny but fair. This being said, I've had 2 harleys (not EVO) but have gone back to street bikes.

ya know pete, I like adventure riding, but I also like cruisin 2up at 5mph below the speed limit not wearing gear, and probably do that more often than the average harly rider that does that all the time .... that's what I did 2 weeks ago, 250 miles or so up the Maine coast, even stopped at a bar

I also go sport riding, again, probably more often than the average sport rider does annually
