Found a 95 Suzuki GS500 for sale and wanted to know more about the bike's handling characteristics. I would get it and either run it in ULW class or just keep it as a backup track day bike, and rent it out to friends trying out track days. What should a expect to pay for a race prepped GS500 with no title, no street stuff. What are its good and bad points? How does it compare the the ninja ex500?
I'd expect to pay less than $1000 for a 95 GS 500, as I know darn good and well you can have a 97 GS 500 prepped for $1000.

Yep if you're looking to buy a GS500 pick up Sheppo's.
Shep's has already had all the expensive stuff done to it (shock, forks, etc). I'd go that route if I were you.
If you are doing EX500, remember that the Penske shock is pretty $$$$$ even used, so don't shell out more than $1k for one without.
EX just has more power, both handle pretty well for what they are. Just a whole boatload of fun.

With the current class structure there isn't a place a GS500 can be competitive without spending multiple VISA's worth of other people's money. Now, in the rain, it's superior handling should help overcome the HP deficit in PTwins but I still couldn't recommend buying one to compete in LRRS. USCRA's Formula EX it'll fit right into. As a TD only mount for you or friends it'll work great, providing the right feedback when pushed, solid handling and braking so you can dial in your lines and reference points without having to ride around an EX500 style spaghetti based chassis. They crash well, parts are plentiful and cheap. If you're going to let real monkey's ride it, consider adding a Dayna rev limiter just to keep unplanned valve adjustments in check.(It WILL float the valves with the stock TCI.)
And yeah, for the price Sheppo's is a better deal by far.
buy Sheppo's so a great, great many of us can stop thinking about buying it.
