sorry bout the nsfw on the bottom of the page for the work surfers
I checked it out at the Indy GP. It's a sweet machine. I'm inclined to wait a year to let any bugs get worked out...and then see if I can find a way to afford one.
2020 KTM SMC R
2006 GSXR-600 Race (LRRS #199)
NO LIMIT
I want one of these SOOOOOO bad, but I can't justify the price tag, regardless of how awesome the bike is.
I need a sugar daddy![]()
Original
Some of the initial reports I read about it also included an incredibly notchy transmission.
No matter how much R&D goes into a product, it's next to impossible to have it perfect the first time around. Real world use subjects products to more than they could ever test for. There will be bugs that need to be worked out.

sat on one last year at a tiny ktm dealer in NC... orange.. way outta my price range but quality quality quality

rode one at a track day at NJ towards the end of the summer. "Notchy transmission" and "super snatchy throttle", yes but still a he11 of a lot of fun to ride fast!!!
Thou I sure looked funny with my red Ducati leathers on a bright orange bike.
There are two on order here at Cycles128, one orange and one black. PM me if you want me to let you know when they are in...![]()
I also got to ride one at NJ race track (thunderbolt)
I have a ton of time on Ducatis but this was too good not to try.
My impressions are:
tall bike, felt good and stretched out. I could tour on the bike easily.
Nice motor, did not have the super low end of a Aprillia or the top end hit of the 1098/999 Ducati's .
It was a great fun motor though some of this could be down to the mapping, I have dynoed enough bikes to know that what you feel is not always reality, I would be interested in seeing one dynoed against the aprillia and Duc.
My bike did not have a poor gearbox it shifted just fine. It even had a very nice slipper ..... setup. KTM does this with mapping I believe not a slipping clutch, I could bang downshifts as smoothly as anything I have ridden before.
Brakes were good but needed better pads, they were not Ducati srong but I would put money on it being pads. Handling was good to excellent.
wind protection at high speeds was not as good as the Ducatis (1098/999/916) when you get up around 150 mph there is not enough to hide behind. Yes I could be smaller.
My only gripe would be the throttle, the bike was great but the throttle set up on my bike was HORRIBLE!
I asked the tech if they could fix it so I could try a good example and they said it was not that easy. I bet it is. The throttle freeplay was way too loose and when you rolled the throttle you had a crazy amount of freeplay before you actually opened it up , when this happened it pulled hard.
It was very hard to modulate, Given enough time you learned the bike.
That was it, I came home and started looking at KTM's I do not know if I will get one soon But I though it was a great first try.
