Re: How do you get someone to give up riding a motorcycle?

Sorry - I've been out of touch for a while and haven't been on the forum. Long story short - Dad does ride the scooter fairly often (every couple of weeks or so). He prefers it on short rides and errands into town to riding his GS. It used to ride fine, although admittedly different than a motorcycle of course.

I really am not going to talk her out of riding. I just don't think it's possible, and it's not going to solve anything. It would just get her upset, and defensive. Just try and talk me out of riding just because I've dumped a couple times...

It would be cool to set up cones in a parking lot and have everyone run them. Get the whole family down there and have some fun. Swap bikes, etc.

I think mom would be most receptive to someone from outside of the family teaching her. We are all "experienced" riders, but not instructors. I've had some great learning experiences with local motorcycle instructors and they are way more knowledgeable than I am. She is also much less likely to become frustrated with someone outside of the family. Just who she is.

Get her some proper boots and padded riding gear.
    Good luck.

Get her a real bike and send her to school. Kawi 250R would be nice. Get her to do track days and she won't want to ride the street anymore.

If I pass my MSF rider coach school I will teach her.

The three-wheeler (as I've heard it called) is cool, just saw one in person recently.

The instructors at motorcycle awareness day are here: gmmrr/index They taught my Intermediate MSF course and I thought they did a great job. I am thrilled they are offering the school in Vermont, it is something we really needed. I looked for one last year with no luck.

Trouble, not sure what to say. I can understand the concern, maybe all you can do is be open with her about your concerns and ask that she try to be better prepared for the hazards of riding, especially the often oblivious car drivers around those of us on two wheels.

Good luck, please keep us posted. Oh, and I have tons of tennis balls cut in half for parking lot maneuvers (as suggested on the Ride Like a Pro DVD) plus some orange cones I used to prepare for the state test. Let me know if you want to borrow any.
