    Hurricane Mountain Road

I will be heading up to N.H. On the bike and with others on theirs soon. We will be staying in Bartlett area.

I was poking around on roads and routes to look into taking and Hurricane Mountain Road caught my eye.

I read some mixed reviews about it and some people said that the blind turns and the no room for on coming traffic makes it a road not worth it.

I know that two people that are riding will be on a Fatboy and the other will be on a Road Glide.

    I think that I will be on a 1098.

So if any of you guys have any slab time on this piece of pavement, please let me know your your thoughts.

    Thanks

    Re: Hurricane Mountain Road

It's a fun road, but it's basically a paved goat trail, complete with the occasional rock poking through the pavement. Lots of tight corners and elevation changes (including some so sudden you almost get air). Awesomely fun road for a dual sport or supermoto, but I expect your Harley-riding friends might not like it too much.

I think that you are right about the H.D.'s on this road

I have another slab of interest. RT 132, Concord to Ashland. Any thoughts?

    Re: Hurricane Mountain Road

Just a heads up for your route planning -- Rte. 302 is closed between Bartlett and Bretton Woods (Twin Mt, Carrol), the Kanc aka Rte 112 is closed from Bear Notch Rd to Lincoln, and there may be other roads that are closed/under repair still. Irene was nicer to the Mount Washington Valley than she was to Vermont, but she still did some serious damage.

    Re: Hurricane Mountain Road

I led a ride there a couple years ago. Somehwere there's a picture of our group riding past a half dozen Harley riders milling around the gate at the bottom obviously trying to decide whether to go or not...! Pretty funny!

But yeah, probably not as much fun on a Harley...but certainly 'do-able'!

That was funny, and it was last summer. Here is the video - Harley guys at the gate debating whether or not to go; about 15 seconds in.

I was the last guy in our group to pass the HD guys on the way up.
There was one guy that followed me up and I lost him at the top.
He must have turned around at some point because we stopped for a picture at the other end and he never came out.

    Re: Hurricane Mountain Road

one time I was on HMR, I was riding sweep on a small group of SVs, we ate at the Moat then headed up HMR, I held back a bit before I started up to get a good rip

approachiing the top, my radar detector went off, all my riding buddies were pulled over when I got there, luckily only a warning

apparently the previous day some kid totaled a PT Cruiser when he went airborn and when he came back down, crunched the underside of the car

they do have a lot of foot & bike races over the mountain, watch out

    Everybody should experience HMR once.

If people can handle a full size truck on that road a Harley should be able to do it. Roughly the same turning radius.....

    Re: Hurricane Mountain Road

Thanks for the feed back and the video.

It doesn’t look as “technical” as others are saying.

Also what I don’t see in this video is the “Crazy tight elevating switch backs” Are there any?

Did the video leave them out?

I’d drag a bagger down that. I know the hops could be an issue, but hell why not give it a go?

I think my tard would be the bike of choice or the RD but that’s not happening. So it will be the 1098. That looks to be an oversized bike for the road. But fuck it, I’ll just have to take it easy on the throttle.

Question: Evan’s Notch, Rt 113, South to north. That’s kind of a goat path in spots. Nice rip and run road. How does that compare to HMR?
    Thanks.

Video has a way of flattening things out. That video definitely makes this road look flatter and straighter than it really is.

That was a fun ride, and the cop was very cool about it, said "I know you are just having some fun, but....".

im pretty sure a SAFE top speed on that road is about 50-60 and thats on the straights only. the tight steep hairpins is probably like 15. the video doesnt show how steep it is, at the beginning there is a switchback that goes up hill that would be a chore to WALK

I'm not sure of Rt 113N from fryeburg to rt 2 due to the hurricane, but if the road is good its alot of fun. My sister has a store on the corner of Chatam rd. and rt. 113. Biker friendly and awesome eats.

    Re: Hurricane Mountain Road

I HMR! I ride it at least once every year and twice this year already. As others have said, it's more technical than the video shows. Give it a little gas on the way up and your front wheel might come off the ground. Wait a little too long to decelerate on the way down the other side and again your front wheel might come off the ground. If you enjoy that feeling you'll give it a little more and your front wheel will loft followed by your rear wheel. If you haven't had the 1098 airborne yet, this is where it will likely happen. HMR is where I've popped the "airborne" cherries of all my bikes including two 848s.

There are parking areas on both ends of this road making this an easy "ride your own ride" section of any route. Harleys should be able to make it just fine but if you're concerned give a second riders meeting at the base and remind them about low gears and riding at their own comfortable pace. A guess would be that the pack leaders would only wait 5 minutes at the other side for the slowest of riders.

Thanks for all the feed back and information about Hurricane Mountain Road. Looks like it will do just fine.

I'll drag the boys on their baggers on this road. They will be fine with it I'm sure. They are die hard bike vets and they will enjoy it, I'am sure.
