    School me on STM slippers

I'm looking at a used STM with 1,000 miles on it. I know nothing of aftermarket slippers. Someone want to summarize for me? How it works, what are the wear parts? What to look out for buying used?

I know it's a lot to ask, but thanks in advance for any insight.

"Slightly" more wear to fibers and steels. Other than that, no real wear issues. I have a Yoyo-Dyne in the CBR and its the star of the show. I wouldn't even need to rev-match downshifts if it wasn't already a solid habit.

If the price is right, go for it.

So, the price is right on the one I'm looking at, but... there's always a but. THe "spring pusher plate" has 3 of the little "tabs" broken from a botched installation. I'm not even sure what these do, but the seller insists that it has no impact on operation.

The STM uses a ball and ramp setup in the basket, so you'll want to check for excess wear on the ramps. If he missassembled badly enough to break tabs off a spring plate, I'd be looking over the mating parts with a fine toothed comb as well as any threaded sections as he REALLY had to botch the assembly.

1,000 miles is a decent amount if it's a track item.

I did see spring plate tab wear over time on mine, so it's not impossible for them to have failed during normal use. It started to show a fatigue crack so I decided to replace it. Know that the spring plate (and any other parts) are very hard to find!!!! I had to order a new one from Canada for like 75 bucks.

As Kurlon said look at the ramps, that part is usually anodized red so you should be able to see wear-through on the finish for a visual-check.

Also look at the spline grooves that mate to the driveshaft to see if they're worn.

Thanks CEO, that's what I was looking for. Do you remember where you got the spring plate from specifically?

Well, not sure what I can tell from these, but for 50% of retail, I'm going for it!

How do you adjust these for more slip vs. less slip?

Re: School me on STM slippers

Those ramps look quite worn to me...? I dunno.

I believe different spring plate tensions can modify slip.

Paul I will try to look back as to where I got the plate and let you know.

Re: School me on STM slippers

Paul, I found the email, the vendor was Eurocorsa. I emailed them at info@eurocorsa.com with my slipper part number and they got back to me quickly.

Looks like I paid 85 bucks canadian for the spring plate.

The attached photo shows the crack in mine...

Re: School me on STM slippers

When you are assembling be sure to use some assembly lube to hold the balls in place on the ramps so as you're putting it all together none of them fall...

Re: School me on STM slippers

I don't see any wear in the ramps. I thought I did at first glance, but pictures can be deceiving. The image I got were pretty hi res and zooming in it all looked pretty much like new. Machining marks and very square edges.

But, that's the risk in buying anything used. If it looks totally shagged, paypal to the rescue.

Oh, and I'll be sure to lube my balls...
