2nd gens have a larger radiator that gets damaged much easier when you crash
I'm also told that even though the 2nd gen makes more power stock, it's easier to get substantial increases in power from the 1st gen, I'm also told that the 99s have the strongest crank

Anyway... to address all of the various points on both sides of the fence that have been brought up in this thread:

Yes, the 03 is a unique model year with a few non-interchangable parts (but not too many)
Yes, 99-02 is carburated, 03+ is injected
Yes, the 1st gen chassis is marginally better than the 2nd gen
Yes, the 1st gen makes more power than a 2nd gen.... when built to the hilt
Yes, the 1st gen crankshaft is marginally better than 2nd gen
Yes, 2nd gen faired versions have a SLIGHTLY wider radiator that MAY damaged in a crash IF it's naked AND you don't use frame sliders.

Blah blah blah blah....

All that said.... Yes there are differences between model years, but the bottom line is this: There's no "crappy" year for an SV650 and NONE of the above are genearlly issues, especially if you're just doing track days.

If you're in the market for an SV & you find one that's well set-up and well cared for and at a price you can afford, BUY IT. They go quick.

Get one that is already track prepped. $2500(fairings, and suspension, maybe banged up a bit, but mechanically sound)-$4500(race prepped with spares and maybe a full engine build). It will cost you a good $1000+ to cheaply do the basic upgrades(track fairings $500, $250 emulators and springs + install labor if you can't do it yourself, $400-1000 rear shock). Most people will also want an aftermarket pipe and the tune/jetting to make extra power in addition to weight savings. So getting a prepped one will save in the long run over buying a nice condition street version($3000) and adding the parts yourself. A beat up salvage version($500) is another story and might be worth it. Even then the modded version is probably a better deal because in addition to the basics it will probably have the pipe, the clip ons, the gearing, the clip ons, etc etc. Not needed, but nice little extra bits that make it a bit more enjoyable to drive

I made that mistake with my track bike. I bought a nice street SV and then starting dumping money into it. After the build was complete I was over $5k in the total investment....a few months later I started seeing race prepped SV's for like $3k. ....but, I still love MY bike though.

Ok so after reading all of this I will be looking for a pair of ex race or at least fully prepped track bikes. I realize that the best deals and widest selection will likely be at the end of next season. I can get through next year on my wife's BMW GS and she can use her old FZ6. We both want FZ7's as well and she will probably get one in the spring (ah the lure of financing). I'm going on 4 years without a contract on my job so when they ever get around to settling my retroactive pay might get me a pair of SV650's for the track. Thank you all who shared input.
