craigslist should be changed to dick you around.com.
As much as selling shit on Craigslist sucks, I prefer it to posting shit for sale here.
It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?
I've bought and sold almost all my vehicles on craigslist. There's a lot of BS that comes up, but once you weed it out and set your own rules than it works pretty well.
I don't deal with "I'll send you a check". If I can't meet you in person in a public place, you're not buying what I'm selling. I mean really guys, if someone offers you more than your asking without having ever even met the person, do you really believe it's a legit sale?

anytime there's an unregulated medium of buying and selling items, there will be scams
out here in CA, it's rampant...I can't tell you how many mexican dudes approach me when I'm driving the BMW in parking lots or gas stations saying "hey, I just need a couple bucks for gas to get my car home...can you help me out? how much do you have? nice car! how long did it take you to save up to buy that BMW?"
yeah, f-that...nowadays I say to them "I don't have a money, but do you have a minute to hear about Jesus Christ?" and they usually walk away
but what's new? money makes people pretty evil![]()

When I first moved to Boston, I was looking for a place to stay for ~6 months and looked on CL for people who had roommates leave in the middle of their. You meet a lot of interesting people that way....
On the plus side, I found a place in Newton (with good roommates) and my next place in Brighton that way, bought and sold my first bike and bought my second on CL. You just need to know: if the email sounds like it was written by a second grader, don't bother responding.
For as long as it keeps paying out, there will always be the famous nigerian 419 bad-check type scams. I accept that any listing I post on CL will get them and just ignore them.
I've seen a few good tricks to simplify like requesting certain things be put in the subject line. Most of the scammers (and dumb people) don't read the ad so you can just ignore most of it if it pisses you off.

I have had to list my number like this: 401-five55-12one2. I was starting to get spam calls when I was listing it 401-555-1212... basturds writing programs to search out phone numbers on CL.
The one other thing that I hate is ads listing what they have and then the "ignore this" line with every possible word relating to bikes after it. So my specific searches for a 97 CR125 come back with hits for a KX250F and a TaoTao 110 quad
Does CL offer searches where you can omit certain words? Just like ebay i.e. - search for "CR125 -kx250f -taotao" (can't check cl right now)
I usually search the thread titles only
If you and everyone else flagged it as "SPAM/OVERPOST" or other category the problem would go away.
My pet peeve is dealers who post in the owner-only car section. Some of them even go to the lengths of taking pics in front of a house. I searched on a phone the other day and the B@d had 20 cars for sale - all "By Owner."
“It's 2 minutes for any capable adult.”
I'll flag mega shitty ads as spam... I'm talking ones without any info at all, those kind. And I hope you all get as mad as I do and do the same
FYI, phone numbers and email addresses have been 'scraped' from any public website for years now. Automated tools are easy to build. And to say 1one2-5five5five wouldn't be terrifically difficult to scrape too with a well made program. These kind of programs are sold in the digital underground and become psuedo-commercial applications. I could totally see them marketing that kind of feature. I could make some suggestions out how to better 'hide' your phone number, but I'm sure the google has better and more current data than I would.

It takes too much effort to flag as spam. There used to be an add-on for firefox that would allow me to flag without even looking at the ad.
I don't list my number on craigslist. When someone emails me interested, and I can verify it's actually a person, I'll give it to them.

I agree with this. There should be some way to show these people how annoying they are.... If I am looking in the "By Owner" section, there is a reason, and there are reasons why they are separate listings. Flagging just isn't good enough. That just comes down to a test of will - some salesman has the entire week to sit there and re-post. Perma-ban?

I know its a scam but this one said Paypal how do they send you money on Paypal and then get it reversed?
There's a decent chance it's a stolen PP account. So that probably isn't their goal. They are trying to turn a stolen PP account's balance in to something useful for them. It's kinda money laundering. You have a stolen account, buy goods off CL, sell at pawn shop, spend money on crack, repeat.
Paypal can reverse transactions. From what I understand, its basically down to if you can convince their claims department. Someone who's a real charmer may have a plan, though I doubt it would be successful more than once.
Mildly unrelated PSA : be wary of the 'gift'. Avoid paying via paypal gift at all costs, paypal will tell you towhen you get screwed.
