Anyone have experience with a set of Shinkos? Price is good, $200 shipped for my VTR1000, not sure if they last though. Thanks in advance for any help.
I would pony up the extra 30-50 bucks for a set of michelins or dunlops. No experience with Shinkos but I will say the other two are worth the extra money.
I thought they had less than satisfactory grip. It was quite easy to spin the rear. Scared the heck outta me...
Yea.....they have come a long way but I would stick with Mich or Dunlops......

Lots of reports of the tread separating on many of their 'adventure' oriented tires. You be the judge on how that quality translates to their more street oriented rubber.
Clayton loves the silly ds tires...I sold my lc4 like a moron before I had a chance to road warrior the fuck outta them.

Take it from a tire installer.
Spend the extra.
Shinkos have come a long way but they arent there yet.
That was the original bias-ply 150/70-17 Shinko 705 (standard rear tire size on pretty much all ADV bikes). They replaced that model with a radial, and it's been fine.
Additionally, the Full Bore M-40 and M-41 models are essentially the same tire, made in the same factory, as the Shinko 705 (the 150/70-17 version is slightly different -- wider spacing between the tread lugs for slightly better offroad performance, V-rated instead of H-, and it lasts a little longer than the Shinko). The Full Bores have become my go-to tire for my Tiger -- they handle much better than they look like they should both on pavement and off, they're fully capable of aggressive cornering, and at $135 a set they're cheap to replace. I chose the Full Bores over the Shinkos simply because of the slightly more aggressive yet better-wearing rear tire, but if they weren't available I'd run the Shinkos.
I can't speak to their street tires, but Shinko's dual sport tires are good.

I loved my 705's. Stuck like they really shouldn't have on my KLR, dry, wet, peg dragging, 600 embarrassing, etc.

ever...
My bike had a shinko on the rear when I bought it. Don't know what mileage it was installed, but based on the tread depth when I bought it and the low and easy miles I put on it, it seemed to wear pretty fast. I think, but can't promise, it was a 712. I put a Dunlop GT501 on it to replace it, and the ride is night and day. Drops in quicker but yet more predictably. The shinko felt like it waddled in the turns, adjustments were uninspiring. The old tire had become somewhat flat-spotted in the center from wear, so I'm not sure if that was the entire reason for the handling but I feel like it had always been that way since the day I got it.

Running 705s on the Tiger and they're Grrrrrrreat! (I had to.)
I'm dragging hardparts long before I run out of grip (bloody low centerstand!) and they do alright in the limited gravel I've had them on as well. I ran 700s (much knobbier) on the DRZ up through Labrador; they lasted 4000+ miles through lots of gravel and tarmac, and stuck way better than I thought they would in the Cape Breton twisties. Awesome tires for the price ($56).

i ran their cruiser (tourmaster) tires on the vmax then went to the verge radials and now advance radials. put some other ones on the harley (i think 712s), and have the podiums on the hawk. they are always the lowest performing on the track from reports I see but all the ones iv'e had on street bikes are sticky as hell, and their longevity isn't the best. buddy had the 523 dirtbike tires and likes them so far. i haven't seen many negative reviews from street riders.
^ thanks for the reminder. I did try the 525 on my 300 for about 30sec...because that's about all it lasted.
I remember thinking "despite all the crap people talk, I'll give them a whirl". Fail.

The knobs jumped clean off the carcass. Just like when you look closely as you pour a glass of soda, you can see all the bubbles jumping outta the glass.

I borrowed a crf250 from Cycles128 when I worked there and put a new shinko on it right before we went riding. The knobs did come off as soon as I nailed the throttle..it was funny. No idea of what model it was. What I posted above when it scared the crap outta me was a street tire on an R6. Again no idea of what model...
New high quality tires will make you love your bike all over again.
If your looking for cheap tires you can get s set of cont is for under 200.

As for shinkos I've heard good things and I've heard very bad things. No first hand experience but I personally would avoid.
I've heard good things about them. One of my friends is picking up a set soon.

My uncle ran a set with no complaints, but that was in Florida, so largely straight up-and-down riding.
