A colleague of mine is signed up for the MSF class in early April. He asked me what he should get for a first bike and my initial response was to get an SV650. Then I read the latest Motor Cyclist and I see the new DL 650 which is a smaller brother of the DL 1000 V strom. It has a slightly detuned SV650 engine and lower gearing overall. It has a nice fairing, comfy ergos and a great price.
My colleague in his early 40s and quite mellow. He's also tall enough to flat foot the bike. I told I thought it would make an awesome "forever" bike that he could easily learn on and never grow bored with. I have to admit, I would not mind having one of those for all round riding.
Curious to hear other opinions on this idea. He seems sold on it.

He's 6'1" 270 lbs. The thing'll look pretty small under him.

Heres a condom. I figured since youre acting like a dick, you should dress like one too.
Sounds like it would be better except for the fact that crashing it would cost more $$ to repair.

it would be a good beginner bike and solo ride but would be very limited for 2 up riding, if that is a future consideration. I would have got the DL650 instead of the SV if it were available when I bought mine...

Two up riding is pretty unlikely for him. Not much of a social life. Don't know why.
