    Shorten Titanium Exhaust??

I am looking to shorten my leo vince exhaust canister I have called 6 or so places to cut the titanium and they all have said no.

anyone know how or a place in the freetown area that will cut my exhaust?

i think i can reinstall the tip myself.

    thanx

Not sure if it is the same exhaust is i quickly searched, but the muffler section looks like it has a pretty good taper. If you remove the end cap, then cut it down, the diameter may be different, and you may have a hard time getting the cap back in?

If its all uniform, then drill out the rivets, cut down the pipe, and rivet it back on.

    Re: Shorten Titanium Exhaust??

Why would you want to shorten the exhaust?

I have no idea why people do these things. Then you'll have a stubby exhaust that will be louder and won't be the way high paid engineers at the factory made it. I'm sure you'll do a fine job with your Craftsman drill and Harbor Freight rivet tool. But, really, why mess with it.

You bike is plenty loud and cool the way it is.

you'll have to find someone that can weld Ti, and that might be difficult & not worth it for ya

    Syntax is dead.

Shortened cans weak. To me it just says this guy has so much time on his hands and nothing to do that he's pacing back and forth in his garage contemplating his can.

    Really, what could be weaker?

That's an excellent question, unfortunately you're asking the wrong person. You should contact M4, Yoshimura, Leo Vince, Termig...hell you should contact nearly all the exhaust manufacturers in the market today and ask them why they went from 22-24 inch canisters to 12 inch cans.

A better question, can you even buy a full 22-24" can nowadays, for a late model bike?

With the right shorty can and the right packing, it won't be much louder than a full length can. If you want ear bleeding loud, you need LOR or Racefit. Or D&D.

Quite honestly I think the shorty cans look a lot nicer than the old 2 footers.

As for cutting the Ti...google. I looked quick like and it looks as if a band saw would work, something that can hold the can stationary.

    Re: Shorten Titanium Exhaust??

The can material is very thin.
Use the Blue masking tape, measure how much you want to cut off (remember, you can't put it back once you cut it!) and mark an even line with black fine point sharpie pen. Then use a Dremmel with the abrasive cut off wheel, cut carefully to the waste side of the line and sand using a file or disc sander to even off the end. Then cut the same amount off of the opposite end of the baffle (the thin end) If the original can had a band around it, line up to the holes already in the baffle and re-drill carefully, too much pressure will crush the end of the cam. A wooden mandrel, such as a broom hendle sticking out of a vice works to prevent distortion of the can. Re-assemble, line up the holes and re-rivet the band to hold it all together.
I did my carbon fiber Akrapovics after a light spill and it all came out perfect, I think it looks better also! Not much louder but I did repack while they were apart.
As mentioned above, if the can is tapered, this will not work!!!
Take your time and be careful.
    Good luck!

    Re: Shorten Titanium Exhaust??

For what its worth, I talked to a guy who welds stuff for aircraft.

He says whatever titanium stuff that he uses to weld titanium is like $275 a pound, so you're going to be paying out of the ass for that job to get done.

If you have the right blade you should be able to cut it, but its going to be very, very pricey (the blade alone will be $60+ I think..) And then finding someone who can weld titanium who isn't going to charge you more $200 is going to be your next challenge. Good luck

    Re: Shorten Titanium Exhaust??

People do this all the time to the stock 04-08 R1 cans (which are ti). If you are really that worried about screwing up, bring it to your local machine shop and tell them what you need done. As stated, the sleeve is so thin a hacksaw would cut through it.

Just cut it with a dremel. Take your time, go slow, be patient, and you will be fine.

You can't use a band saw, the material is too thin. Dremmel or bust!
