I come from the land down under, where women glow and men plunder.
In Australia, when you see the 5-0, the accepted symbol is to tap your lid with your finger when you see riders going in the opposite direction. What is the signal here? I saw some po-pos this morning and tried to signal some other riders I saw, but I'm not sure if they got it.
Now, I'm off to make a vegemite... sandwich.
same signal around here.

yeah i always pat the top of my helmet.
Live life to its fullest, you never know when you'll get a second chance.
Thanks homies. I even did it today for a Harley rider... ungrateful fucker.
I usually pop a wheelie to let the group know......just my style
i keed......i don't know how to wheelie![]()
Tapping the helmet is the signal in Canada as well.
Last year, near Ludlow Vt. I had a car flash his lights at me. I slowed the bike down and sure enough around the next corner was a state tropper.
I just turn my blue lights on. People usually seem to understand that.
Seriously, be careful about flashing your lights. If there is another cop in the area, most states have laws restricting flashing your lights for anything other than a road hazard, you might get a ticket for that.
No law I know of says you cant tap your helmet or make that ground-patting slow down motion.
That's actually 100% correct - which is why i dont flash... I've seen people get cited for that exact reason, and when they say they 'didnt do it' they get cited for defective equipment. I have used the helmet tap for any type of emergency vehicle oncoming, seems to work well and definately can put a pack in single file and get them on the side quickly if necessary.
You took my line.
Sometimes when i'm on the harley i'll pull up next to people and motion with my hand too.
I have not problems with riders tapping their helmet. If it gets others to slow down them I am accomplishing my duty without really having to do anything else but be visible.
Flashing lights can get you into trouble. I personally have never stopped anyone for it because i've never seen it on duty.
What huh? I just thought I had left my lights on by accident and was turning them on/off to make sure I had it right.
(disclaimer: I sometimes by habit do get in the truck and turn my lights on in the middle of the day, and have to 'on off' them while I'm driving to make sure I have them off and then I go 'I'mmmmm DUMB')

I tap the top of my helmet, or do the ground patting thing if it's a cruiser (they seem to react to that one better).

If you run into a wall with a helmet on, you still ran into a wall.

Ground-patting slow down motion. Used it yesterday.
Go fast. Have fun. Repeat.
I use a combination of patting down and the universal "check please!" motion.
I know most cagers won't get the helmet tap - they might even think it means "I'm crazy" or "you're crazy" but I think the combo I use will at least amuse them if they don't get until they round the corner and "Oh! that's what he meant".
I want to warn cagers just as much as bikers, as I get most of my heads up signals from cars.

I tap the helmet to warn other riders. I also had some cars flashing high beams to warn me. I always give'em a wave and slow down.
This thing is not so common in US, but in my country ( not russia) everyone in cars flashes when they see cops.

not to threadjack but does anyone even use the flash to pass?
