I was on my way to work the other day when these guys BLEW past me. I estimate their speed was about 95-100 and I was really hoping that the trooper would be in his usual spot right around the corner but he wasn't. So I get off the exit at work and there they are. I'm guessing they were headed to the Kanc and for the next hour I awaited a call for a crash in the hairpin turn. There was a fair amount of traffic that day even in the northcountry since it was a Fri afternoon and they were weaving in and out of traffic and riding very unsafe. So I thought that I would take a photo and share.
If it happens to be anyone here - ride smarter you douche.
BTW - the hairpin turn on the Kanc has been consistently covered in gravel from people cutting the corner too tight going eastbound so gravel is over the whole road. I know there are a few of you heading that way for a ride and I wanted to warn everyone the the hairpin is NOT a good place to lean. The Kanc has been VERY packed too with a TON of traffic so it will be slow going and if you are riding like a dick I will stop you so please ride safe.

Photo?
nice "before" shot.
Hopefully nobody ever submits the "after"
Nikon...thanks for the heads up. As you know I am hoping to lead the Big, big, long, long, ride...ride later this month and based on your advise I am going to avoid the Kanc. I am doing everything I can think of to keep the pace fun and safe at the same time. It should be a good ride but I am open to any other suggestions....BTW - the hairpin turn on the Kanc has been consistently covered in gravel from people cutting the corner too tight going eastbound so gravel is over the whole road. Gear?
I mean i don't wear much myself, but shorts and T-shirts,
the title couldn't be more fitting!
I've not been there in a few weeks but every time I have been through, there was some gravel on said hairpin. I dunno if i'd re-route a ride for it, but that turn is well marked and you have inside intel from 2 of us at least in the immediate area. Slow the pace, warn all riders ahead of time....no worries.
The traffic on the other hand, I don't doubt it being bad. Touristy types.
yep all conditions normal on the kanc. lots of tourists, poor road conditions, too many fuckin douche bags riding over there heads in heavy traffic.
Dave - as we talked about before, it's been bad there this year. The tourists have been unbelievable and driving like morons to boot.
Unfortunately, there isn't much for a re-route other than heading through Crawford Notch (302) but I think that you'll run into a fair amount of tourists there also. The whole length of the Kanc has been really slow going lately with the tourists so it's gonna be a boring Kanc ride for ya. The only problem with that, other than being boring, is that people are going to be tempting to pass. I can also tell you that the Sheriffs Office has been having details patrolling the Kanc and stopping people for like 10 over, sometimes less. They don't get to stop people much so when they get these details they stop EVERYONE.
The rest of the ride should be fine but for the 32 miles of the Kanc - keep it VERY slow and even more so on the hairpin. Please don't rip through Lincoln either cause I will be on that day with another guy who would love to stop a bunch of bikes.
So keep it safe and I'll keep and eye out for you guys. If you can give me a timeframe when you'll be heading through and if you stop somewhere (Munce's Shell station is popluar with the Dunkin Dounuts there) and if I see ya stopped I'll pop by and say Hi.
Ride safe.

yeah...rerouting to Bear Notch then EAST back to 16 then 113 and 113a west. Thats a really nice road and should be less hassle....

I have a dumb question/observation about the photo.
Noticing the lead rider and the guy on the right...
Don't you usually leave with your left foot down (and not your right?) since you're holding the rear brake with your right foot?
Either that, they put both feet down and can't coordinate the two.(Which, uh... sometimes I'm guilty of doing...)
HP
for me, if I don't need to hold down the brake, I'll always have my right foot down so then as soon as the light turns green I can shift outta neutral asap.... but thats just me...
huh??? I usually lead with my left foot UP since that's where I shift from. I only use my rear brake if I am on a hill and want to do something with my right hand. But that's just me. I don't think there's any hard and fast rule, or universally accepted 'best practice'.
I am sure someone better versed in the MSF doctrine can weigh in with a more reasoned opinion....

I am an ambifooter depends upon the situation.
Supa Motarded! If you see me backin it in, keep watching...Im about to crash
Zip Tie Alley #237
ok... i guess i should have been a lil more specific... i'm usually in neutral the times when it won't help being in gear (2 cars or car already behind me or if i need to stretch) but for me it's more comfortable to have my right foot down than my left...
I find if you keep the bike in neutral and just keep the RPM high the bike will balance itself and there is not need to put a foot down.

i always put both feet down, except the cases where i dont need my rear break and want to shift quickly out of the light, then i put my right foot down.....then sometimes i want to hold my rear break and just dont give a shit about how i need to shift out of the light and i put my left foot down....then on rare occasions i want to hold the rear break and stay ready to shift fast and i just sit there with no feet down....but other than that i ALWAYS put both feet down
