So I got the "new" 03 R1 out of storage today. This was also the first time I really got to "ride" the bike in any semi-serious way since I bought it. All I can say is “DAMN!!!”. I rode up RT 3 from Duxbury, to 93 North, Storrow Dr, and a few random back roads. Despite hitting about 110mph (not all that fast), I never got out of 3rd gear and never got above 8K RPM. Liter bikes are no fucking joke! The handling didn't seem all that different from my old R6, just a tad bit slower. The biggest difference I noticed was the throttle response. I keep hearing over and over how every Yamaha bike since 2003 has had "really choppy and abrupt” throttle response. Sure, I noticed this on my R6, but it didn't seem all that bad. Well, I should say that it didn't seem all that bad until rode the 03 R1. The throttle response on the R1 is soooooo smooth compared to the R6. It was really amazing how much difference there is. I don’t know Yamaha decide to change their fuel injection system from the 2003 models, it’s so sweet. The powerband was pretty neat, too. It also seemed much smoother than my R6...it's like the power just keeps growing and growing but doesn’t have any major dips or peaks. Another really neat aspect was being able to get some serious UMPF! from the bike with out having to get up to 10K RPM (like the R6).
I'm *really* impressed with this bike after my first somewhat serious ride on it. It’s going to be a fun summer. Big thanks to everyone who directed me towards the R1 back when I was trying to figure what to get for a next bike (esp. Lucky 13, who gave the tip-off. I so owe you a 6-pack or something)

for me it was the best inline four i'd ever been on, at least until the 04 came out.
it's so linear you need to be very careful when rolling on through a turn, it's easy to build too much speed to fast.
do you have a steering stabilizer on it?
if not get one. i put one on the 02 before i ever rode it.
oh and if it has dunflops (208'S) be very careful when on cold roads. if i bought a bike and it had 208's i'd replace them before riding the bike.

exactlly. i kept hearing how everything post-03 was abrupt, and brilliant the 02-03 FI was...now i know why! and it has a (scotts) stabalizer on it...and no Dunlops (Michielins)Originally posted by sandman

You can always fix the throttle response if it's jerky, etc...
The R6 is not bad at all. The VFR is a hell of a lot worse until you get a Power Commander.
It's going to be NASTY if they don't get it perfect when they have to add 2008 Emissions to liter bikes... really, really nasty. Guys are going to be spinning up cold tires and crashing at 5mph all over the place coming out of their driveways.
