Is this just par for the season? Who steals a bike in the winter right? Steal it during prime good weather. It'll sell the fastest, fetch the highest price, and blend in better among a crowded market.

I didn't expand on the circumstances originally because, as you'll see, they don't offer much that is actionable for others who simply don't have a garage, security system, etc. and who would not even ride if the bikes weren't nearby and able to be ridden on short notice.
The motorcycles were parked outside in a nice neighborhood, covered, locked to each other and to an immovable object with a modest chain and lock, the Honda's steering column was locked, both parked at the back of a driveway, inside a rounded copse of trees and high hedges, blocked in the front by 5 vehicles, but with some egress out the side and down a neighbor's driveway (which is how I assume they were stolen, as none of the 5 vehicles has new scratches). They were stolen Monday night/Tuesday morning, which in my neck of the woods saw heavy rain and storms all night with cooler temps. Stealing motorcycles in the pouring rain when many windows are shut must be from a 200-level thievery course.
What I am interested in is hearing from folks on this forum who have attempted to make a claim (whether successful or not) on their renter's or home owner's insurance policies for a trackbike that is otherwise uninsured. Feel free to PM me. I will be reviewing my policy this weekend.
I'm also curious to know what percentage of folks have a track-dedicated bike and (a) do not carry any insurance on the bike whatsoever, (b) carry MA minimums for all coverage on the bike but have resolved only to make a claim against comprehensive for thefts (and not, e.g., for a wreck at the track), and (c) those who have been able to secure coverage for only comprensive/theft on the track bike. This may require a poll.
Thanks.

I am always worried about keeping my bike parked overnight down in that area. I have had good luck (knock on wood) but these stories scare me. I don't live down there so there would be no homeowner/renter's claim..just good ol' bike comprehensive.
Good luck with finding them, really that is so crappy they were a**holes.

Agree that it was definitely planned well in advance. They took the chain, the lock and both covers that were on the bikes and the racing stands that were under the trackbike. In fact, all that was left behind was a small broken piece of metal that probably came off the Honda but from memory I can't place where.

I now have a track bike. I have no plans to insure it. It is garaged and not really worth that much. If it were stolen, yes, I would pursue my homeowners. I have no idea how far I'd get, but I'd definitely be talking to my agent.
Oh, and may the thieves' dicks turn black and fall off after causing unspeakable pain.
Update: Just received a call that the CBR was recovered today in Lowell. It's owned by the insurance company now, but I was surprised to receive that call.

Buy it back for cheap and part it out or use it as a track bike.

Lowell?? Surprising....
Wow, that's interesting. Did you learn anything about the circumstances of recovery? Or about the initial theft?
