I was thinking abouth doing this to my rc51 this winter. Did you need to machine press off the lower bearings? I thought I saw a note to that effect on DBConz rebuild thread.

A machine press may help, but we were able to do it by cutting a notch in the lower race that was stuck on the stem and then 13uddha hit it a few times with a flathead and a hammer and it came loose.

As DBConz said, don't use a torch...

Yeah, sorry about not stopping in. I lost track of time and then it was well into the afternoon before I realized it.

Total quote I got was about $300-$350 for parts and labor, and the labor they said was under 4 hours.

I've done this with mountain bike forks a thousand times and you can usually work that race loose with a couple of flathead screwdrivers wrapped in cloth. But I guess if you didn't need to re-use that race, cutting it would be quicker.

there's also a tool for knocking the race out of the headtube: Park Tool Steering Race Remover RT-2 PMRT2

    This offer stands......

read the thread. shoot me a message or post up and we can set up a time. I would like to by the beginning of next season have worked on at least 1 of every brand of bike..... so i am offering up free garage time just to get a feel for the way different bikes are put together.

    the more twins the better.

also a triple would be nice.....

This was enlightening. I just picked up the wife's 620 over the weekend. I'm not real familiar with these bikes, but the front end felt a little off... When I grab the brakes and rock it back and forth I can feel and hear it clicking...

    What year?

If it has not been stored in a garage i would definately consider changing the bearings out.
