Makes sense.
I was just receiving the impression from most posters in this thread that even on a dirt/gravel road they would have a lot of trouble making it down one. Just observing the differences between those who started on dirt and those who didn't. I've noticed my friend's dad who has never been on dirt, but has been racing for some time now stated he absolutely hates it when the rear tire skids or the bike gets squirelly/slippery like a dirt bike would in a corner. Stuff like that has never bothered me on my street bike and probably saved my ass last year when I had the rear wheel on my CB lock up at 75+ MPH, but I've been in the dirt since I was 7. I love when my street bike gets squirelly beneath me. Puts me into my own little motocross world for a few seconds.
I agree, what you had to go through sounds plain nasty. The most off-road I've taken my Ninja was down an old fire road with puddles.
I never rode dirt as a kid. I started at 17 on a street bike.
I love riding a well graded dirt road. Don't mind the rear getting squirrely.
I do mind deep rutted, poorly maintained, goat paths filled with holes of undetermined depth and slick mud. I really have no idea how to properly ride these and I will be the first to admit it. I imagine it doesn't help my case that I ride a street bike with street tires that cake easily.
YMMV.
That's the stuff.
