There is no horse, let alone a high horse near anything I've posted here.

I won't ride on it a whole lot...it's mostly dirt trails with some snow in the mountains for maybe 1-2 months (live in socal)...

    this schnit

and I suck at riding...and I ride a bike older than some guys on here...so pretty much anything is better than knobbies for me, ha

this is what I was thinking -

Tire Studs | Grip StudsŪ Screw-In Tire Studs | Traction in Ice, Snow and Dirt

I like that it has a wide thread, so without a liner, I'd hope it stays in the knobby longer

I'd mount it on my 18" spare rear rim for the 2 months a year I want the traction (maybe on a trials tire)

but gripstuds are $120 for 100 studs...and the K3 uses 304 studs on the rear for $286 (including a rear tire that is a hard compound)...so the K3 looks like a better deal and pre-studded

or maybe just get the K3 rear and stud my own front (with grip studs)

or because I suck, maybe knobbies are fine...but part of me really wants to try studs in snow...or maybe because I saw it, I start visualizing myself using it, but don't really need it...yeah I dunno

    Re: Need Studded Ice/Snow/Offroad tires?

bergs, I appreciate you chiming in, and I'm glad it was as obvious to you as I intended it to be to everyone. I'm by no means a forum noob, I've been on many since I first discovered what they were 8 years ago (didn't grow up in the states), and I've seen the full array of nonsense or lack there of. Doesn't bother me, as long as I did my diligence to make my point clear.

It's all good, I will still get tires regardless, just didn't know if someone else was in the same boat looking to half ass an array of winter riding, with out dropping a fortune to only be set up properly for one type of riding (ice guys....).

breakdirt*.. I considered actually exactly what you said, just getting the K3 studded rear, and making my own front with a little more aggressive screw. I do have fairly good condition dirt tires I am ditching this year, so that's what prompted me to start looking at all of the different options.

However, it's now going into February in the 50s, I was out dirt riding today, and spring is only a few weeks away. May not even bother this year. But I still like the latter idea of K3 (or similar) rear, and just make my own front, over the summer.

we get a deal w' 4 people buying the rear?

or we gotta buy front n rear?

    I already have an excessive number of wheels/tires I never use LOL...19" paddle tire rear...18" rear rim w' 90/10 street/dirt DS tire & smaller sprocket...21" front rim w' 90/10 street/dirt DS tire

I've swapped rims once...for "sumo"...and they kinda sucked...am considering re-lacing the hubs for some 17" hoops instead w' good rubber. then just have the paddle/studded 19" tires mounted the 2-3x/year when I want to use 'em...then just run DOT knobbies the rest of the year

I think it has to be 4 full sets. buttttt, I could talk to the guy. I know my friend will be getting whatever I do. We'd still probably want a couple more people though if we're just getting rear tires.

Not to derail these shenanigans with an on topic post, but there's a guy in ri that makes studded tires. You support the loc-dog, save on shipping.
I think that's where jc got his.

Bhavesh, and everyone else thinking of screwing your own, with screw in studs or Kk's, use 5200 if you want them to stay in the tire. That is all.

Oh I thought we were ragging on the ice riding crew, TTDs, and other things that have no relevance to this thread.

    Carry on.

don't know who jc is. and lack of common sense would be letting Jason borrow your MX track oriented bike for learning to ride in the woods

And he is now a better rider for it isn't he?

I told him not to be a pussy. It sunk in after a few times.

    Re: Need Studded Ice/Snow/Offroad tires?

Since this has turned into a discussion about studded snow tires, if anyone with a KTM is looking for some, these may still be available. If the guy is still sitting on them when I can scrape together some extra cash, I'll buy them for next winter.

    Re: Need Studded Ice/Snow/Offroad tires?

Riders are simply misinterpreting "studs", (sometimes referred to as Rally Spikes, or simply "spikes") which are for woods riding, and "screws", which are for ice (lake/pond) riding. The OP was correct in his posting.
