I saw a groton cop on rte 40 this afternoon absolutely hauling ass (lights and siren on) riding the towns police bike while wearing a t-shirt, open face helmet, and sneakers. WOW, another fat, gearless guy on a harley going way too fast.
Why the fuck don't they have to wear some sort of gear?
They don't wear fullface helmets because they want to appear 'open and accessable' to the public. Which is utter bullshit. They can wear flip-up helmets like the English cops do.
Personally I think it's just old-white-guy bullshit rules where they think all that gear is for fags. Tough guys don't need it!!
English and Euro cops were full gear...

Just a thought, If I was a shop guy test riding a cop bike?
OT
It pays to play.
Ride fast,
You will get farther before it is over!
I didn't know Groton had mounted cops. I live in the next town and have never seen one.
i know north reading has them and that guy was geared to a reasonable extent. had gloves boots and a vest (no jacket). was wearing a brain bucket though.
BTW if you are flying through north reading think twice because i know at least one cop there can catch you doing 125mph from a standstill!!! it was unreal.
I have quite a few good buds who are either chp or local officers that ride motorcycles for their job.
It's all about not intimidating joe public. If you were a normal old soccer mom or joe sixpack, you'd pee your depends when the scary man covered in black leather got off the motorcycle to give you a ticket. That's how it's always been explained to me.
My buds get around with some underarmour most of the time. Knee, shoulder and back.
What can they do? Red-tape.

I am still amazed mass hasnt done a damn thing about it either after the death of a motorcycle officer in the tunnel a couple years back. the only time they wear jackets is when its cold and I doubt they have armor. If I was a cop riding I would go out and get gear and wear it. As was said you can always wear flip up helmets so when you pull them over you just flip up the helmet and bam theres your WHOLE face.

I disagree.
Why are my buds wearing armor under their uniforms then? They scrape squid juice off the road all day. Clearly they are not blind to the consequences of asphalt surfing sans protection. (I'm only speaking of CHP, I know nothing of the local MA motor officers.)
Just my 2 cents.

Look across the seas. They do exactly that and the public is totally comfortable with it as motorcycles are a way of life.
Here, most of the public has a tarnished image of motorcyclists in general and the fear is that leathers and full face helmets would simply scare a majority of the public. Think Mad Max.
The fear is we'd have people who wouldn't pull over or worse, they might even run.
Just because it makes sense doesn't mean the U.S. will do it...common sense isn't always so common.
