I'm in the market and looking for some opinions. Yes, I know the best helmet is the one that fits your head. As far as features go and overall build quality, what are your thoughts?
My budget is $200 and I'm looking to try before I buy, preferably this weekend. The Warwick Cycle Gear is only 20 minutes from me in Pawtucket, any other places I should check out?
I had an HJC CL-16 and I'm not interested in another one, or any other HJC that uses the same hinge/lock mechanism.
Adrenaline cycle in swansea has hundreds of helmets in stock. Plenty under $200.
If they fit you, Scorpion makes a nice helmet for a budget. DOT/ SNELL rated with some decent features like drop down sun visor and the visor that cracks open for venting. I got one for 60 on closeout.
I love my Scorpion. that gets my vote.
The HJC FG-17 is a solid budget helmet. Fiberglass, snell, ~$150. The lock mechanism is different than the older HJCs, it is on the front of the visor above your chin instead of the little rocker switch thing on the side that the CL helmets have. I had one for about a day before I returned it. Too round of a fit for me, I get a pressure point on my forehead.
Airmada for $180. You'll be happy.
Scorpion is a good choice too. Whatever fits you correctly.

I have this exact helmet, I bought it last year and I paid close to $300.00 and LOVE IT
FYI the Scorpion is a pronounced oval shape, the HJC is round. So if one of them does not fit well, the other probably will.
I think an oval would probably suit me better.
This is where I got my current Bell RS-1: Motorcycle Closeouts
They're usually about a year old, but that still gives you 4 years (or more if you don't care about that kind of thing) of useful helmet life for under $200.

Another thumbs up for Scorpion helmets
Went to Adrenaline and they had a big selection, no scorpions though. A couple of FG-17 but large only. I ended up walking out with the Icon Airmada which at first glance appears miles ahead of the CL-16 and is a much better fit.
I should be breaking it in this Sunday, we'll see how it goes.
Thanks all.
I like scorpion helmets as well. My first helmet was an Exo400 which fit my head great, then I got an exo700, but it was too round so it hurt my forehead after an hour or so. Last year I picked up another exo400 on discontinued closeout for like $70 and I use that as my track day helmet. On their newer models, they have the drop down sunvisor on some of their lower end models now too.
I have a Bell Vortex (<$200) for running around town. Fits just as nice as my Bell Star helmets with nearly the same great ventilation and features.
I like Bells for fit, price, and features.
Drove up to VT today, someone followed me home...

Jealous.
What's the difference between a bolt and a screw?
First you screw, then you bolt.
So, we're going to hook up for that ride in the Berkshires this year, yes?
Edit: anyone know of some rockin' deals on PP3's or PR4's? Would need to ride the bike in and have them mounted.
