I now it comes in differ oct rates, so how high can you go before you start doing some real damage. there is a place I can get some and I dont want to get to strong a fuel. I will probably be running a 50/50 mix. any input would be helpful and appreciated.
You want input? Save your money, and run the lowest octane you can. High octane is to revent pre-detonation, which can occur on a highly tuned bike. Unless you running a turbo or something, that means pump-gas, probably regular, unless you've advanced your timing.
Higher octane, is harder to ignite, therefore resists pre-detonation. It also can leave more carbon deposits in the engine due to incomplete combustion. Its a great myth though.

Most of the bikes these days run piss for octane and run well.
Take the SV1000, it will run delightfully on 87 octane.
Common rule...start low, if you hear detonation, bump it up a point or 2. (or read your plugs...they tell you everything)
If you change compression ratios, add more lead on the timing, you may need to go up. BUT..if you can get the squishband tighter, sometime you can get away with running a higher comp ratio, and stay with a lower octane fuel.
So just to add another nail to the misconception that higher octane makes more power is a false one...
Oh and another thing..you don't want to mixing any kind of witches brew that comes from VP, or any other race fuel provider....
A bit of advice passed on to me from people really in the know...
Run what your engine was designed/built to run on. If your bike was built to run on 87 octane, higher octane petrol most likely won't do you a bit of good. In fact, it could be more harmful than anything...
MCN did an awesome, in-depth article backed up by extensive dyno testing and researched further with engine tear downs a coupla years ago. It only backed up what knowledgable people have told me...
Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?

I thought higher octane is better also until I put it in my bike only to find out the bike like it lost about 5 HP. Just run pump gas or if you want a good low octane race gas try Ultimate 4. But if you only riding on the street you will spend $1,000 a week because it costs $50 for 5gal.
