All I'm thinking of is a chain and sprocket set, that is completely washed of lube, and had it's life shortened considerably. I tend to think that way, as I run non o-ring chains. Still can't be good for the sprockets though.

water in river crossings is clean compared to the grime that gets on your chain when riding in the rain in traffic
if anything it helps clean dirt off your chain

I use Silkolene whatever on my chain, and jesus it's hard to get off. I don't think being dunked in water at 20mph would get it off..!

If your chain is tired and no longer seals well then the water gets in.
If you ride more then 10 miles in the dry it will dry out.... no harm
If you ride in the rain and then it sits for days it will rust inside then wear quickly.
I will bow to Randy O who is now the expert in all things high mileage
