Looking to go full fucking retard on handlebar tech this season. Just want to get some opinions on what you guys are running, how you like it, pros and cons, ect. I currently run a Sena SMH-10 bluetooth headset. It does pretty good for what it is, I can stream music from my phone as well as hear turn by turn from nav. What I'm looking at is going to a dedicated motorcycle GPS (Zumo,) radar detector, and CB radio.
It seems like a good way to get that done is start with a unit like the Sena SR-10 two-way radio adapter. It has an input for CB, plus 2 additional 2.5mm inputs for audio (GPS, radar.) Should then be able to pair this to my headset. I THINK the SMH-10 allows simultaneous Bluetooth so I should be able to keep my phone paired too, not sure on that though. Also not sure how it handles priority if it does allow it. Example: On a phone call and a route update, radar alert, or CB com occurs. Anyone confirm?
This all assumes I stay with Sena. Any other product recommendations? I have a dual set of SMH-10's, it would be cool to use them, I also don't mind selling them off and replacing with something that's going to work better with all of the accessories factored in.
As far as getting into a good motorcycle specific GPS unit this season and I'm thinking the Zumo 660 is the way to go. More or less looking for a user poll from guys who run it as well as comparable models. I want gloved operation, I want waterproof, I want easy ability to plot (Base Camp) and upload (shared) routes. I don't want to use my iPhone for navigation for a lot of reasons. It's a bit annoying that there are some features on the 350 that aren't available on the 660. Using tracks (non road routes) is a big reason to run the 660, but the 350 offers fancy projected traffic pattern gizmos. 660 has MPS, 350 doesn't. Why can't they just make one unit that does all of the cool shit? All features accounted for I'm leaning towards the 660. Apparently the 390 is total crap and the 665 just adds XM capability.
Also, new(?) idea: I know there's a bunch of guys who run Garmin and have a lot of kick ass routes saved (DucDave, looking at you.) What are the thoughts on starting a library of routes that guys take so they can be easily shared? I do a bunch of riding and a lot of it is looking for good roads (SE MA sucks) and it seems like not enough is quality riding.
I went to MMI I know what Im doing here chief
I won't post exact routes cause I don't have any saved but go full opposite of where you are.
NW MA roads are awesome with some great views and interesting places to stop at.
I have Zumo 660 and like it. It did not play well with my Iphone, but a couple of SW updates fixed that and it works OK now.
I struggle with base camp and cannot understand why I can't simply drag my mouse along a map and have it make a route out of my track. Seems so simple. I would probably be better at it if I used it more, but it's such a pain...
I think Sena is where it's at for helmet com setups. I want that 2-way radio adapter. I'd like to use it with a cheapie FRS radio to get in on Seacoast group ride chatter without bothering with a Chatterbox.
No experience with the rest. Curious what you wind up with.
If money were no object, I'd have the Garmin semi-hand helds (Montana? Oregon?) on my radar too. Capable of off-payment usage too. Not sure that is a concern or not. I know a couple here have them and dig 'em.
CB? Why? The only guys I know with CBs are Goldwing and Harley touring guys.
For any effective CB range you'll also need an antenna.
Yeah, go FRS/GMRS.
I was thinking CB was what was used on the Seacoast rides and is a widely used com method (have it in both of my jeeps for trail coms.) Bluetooth is good and the newer units have big range but are usually limited to 4 riders. The new SM-20 has a 1.5 mile range. Didn't realize FRS was what was being used.
For the record, the Zumo 660 is capable of doing off pavement.

Most of the cats on Seacoast rides are using the Chatterbox X1. That does FRS or GMRS I think. They don't have a proper spec sheet on their site. But it is not CB.
Anything can go off-pavement. I use a hand-me down Nuvi wrapped in a plastic baggie. Those Montanas just do it way bettah. .. So the salesman says.
Was hoping to hear someone has put a complete system in like I'm thinking of, that's a shame. I guess I'll have to be the guinea pig.
