The stock seat sucks...like sitting on a 2x4. Seat Concepts make a Low/wide seat foam and cover for $159 that solves the problem.

I built my `07 last year. It actually started as an "S" model, but I converted it to full SM spec (forks, swingarm, ect..). It's making 50hp. with the BB kit,FCR,cams,MRD, and still retains the bulletproof reliability DRZ's are known for.

what would something like that sell for?

if setup as a dual sport, can these handle a 45 minute highway ride, then hit the trails, then 45 minutes on the highway back home?

I've been tempted by those TW200's. Just saw one on CL for $800 earlier tonight.

My buddy and I both ride DRZ's. He's got an SM and I've got an S (Just in green Kawi livery). We do mostly dual sport stuff and they are the perfect bike for around here in my opinion. Ride to the trails, explore, pop out wherever, ride home. Like was mentioned before, bulletproof and low maintenance, but you won't be setting any speed records. The SM will max out on the highway at about 97mph fully tucked in. Mine is geared for more off road and tops out a little less than that. We both love the bikes and the aftermarket support for them. Great all around performer especially if you want to get dirty as well.

Re: Tell me about the DRZ400SM

Had the SM, loved it, miss it. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. I only got rid of it so I could buy a KTM for racing. It's definitely 'softer' than the KTM/Husky/converted MX tards, but it really comes back to 'time and a place'. I have no desire to ride my KTM on the street. I'd love another DRZ

The DRZ was the most fun I ever had commuting. I'd get about 90-100 miles per tank. The bigger carb and an exhaust opened it up a bit, but it'll never be like an MX 450 without some serious motor work. However, it also doesn't require the maintenance that those race engines do. Maintenance intervals are more on par with a "normal" machine.

Crashed it a few times and never did any real damage. Scraped Barkbuster, etc...no big deal.

I did 2-3 years of trackdays on it. Even did Penguin and an LRRS race weekend with it. It's not the most ideal bike for the racetrack, but it can still be hustled around enough to have a damn good time.

I think I saw 100 indicated going downhill with a tail wind, so it's definitely not a speed demon, but it'll do highway pace if you're so inclined. It's just not very comfortable. The benefit is, it's so fun to ride on the back roads, you'll find yourself not minding the detour around the highway. On the twisty stuff, it's so easy to embarrass sport bikes and still not feel like you're riding on the edge.

If you're looking for a street bike that is fairly cheap, bulletproof and a whole lot of fun...then the DRZ is a damn good option. If you're looking for a designated track toy, go to one of race based MX motors and buy a lot of oil!
