Lesson learned - DON'T mess aorund on the street

Went for a ride after work today and 2 minutes from house I get thrown from the bike.

Came off of 93 after a great ride and was ripping the left sweeping off-ramp up and there was a ton of cars, commonsense told me not to mess around but the turn was so enticing. Took the inside lane and before it even happened I knew the GTi in the middle lane was going to come into my lane. Sure enough, as I am way too committed to the turn and right in his blind spot, he turns into my lane. Smashed right into the back left corner of his car and the bike tossed me. Landed on my right side and slid for a good 100 feet. Bike went even further. I was able to consciously stop myself from trying to stand as I was still sliding. I was able to pick the bike up and ride it home. VERY LUCKY.

    The Damage:

Right fairing is banged up and rashed.
    Bolt ripped out of frame
    Front Cowl cracked
    Right peg ripped off
    Rear brake lever bent
    Exhaust dinged and scratched
    Signals broken
    Brake lever bent
MC reservoir cover popped off? Maybe from the force of landing on the lever?
    Rash on rear cowl

    The Meat:
    Right inner thigh is sore
3x4 of rash on hip where I landed
    Sore elbow
Right big toe a shade sore

The Gear(thank god for this stuff):
Cortech GX Sport Textile Jacket - Burned through outer Cordura material on right arm

Sidi Vertigo Corsas - Scuffed the right toe, scratched left shin plate

Banana Republic Jeans - Scuffed near the hip, rear right pocket torn

Alpinestar GP Plus gloves - Knuckle Guards a little scuffed

Scorpion EXO-400 - I don't think this ever touched the ground, I think it bounced off the rear window though.

If anyone can get anything out of this, I hope it's the the street is not the place to be fucking around. I was very, very lucky. I will be saving all riding above 6/10's for the track now. DO NOT fuck around on the streets, especially around cars. I took a nice heaping serving of humble pie today.

    Oh, and wear your gear.

Experience is what we get. Right after we could have really used it...!

When old timers post up suggestions and observations about safe rideing and gear, it's usually based on our own experience. Hopefullly you've done this for someone else...

Thanks for the post! Glad you're OK...and ATTAGT is the only way to roll...!

Yeah Thank God your ok man. Thats coulda gone much worse. I had a really close call last season, similar situation, but everyone had stopped at the end of the on ramp, I didn't go down but road the rest of the way home shaky. I try not to ride like that unless I can see all the way thru the turns. You came out ok though, thats the most important thing and you obviously learned from it lol. I'm glad you came out alright for the most part.

No cops, I'm pretty sure that we would have both been found to be at fault with my good pace and his negligence.

I still would've called the cops, now he can go after you because you didn't file anything and you'd be screwed

Re: Lesson learned - DON'T mess aorund on the street

He could say he rear ended him and since he wasn't hurt real bad thanks to gear (thanfully) then the cage could say this biker rear ended him and split, you never know people are fucked

IMO it is always better to bring the cops into it so you don't get screwed. You never know what people are going to do.

Glad you're ok. I would have called the cops though. Obviously the guy didn't head check for his turn. Plus that is some major damage to your bike. I imagine you'll claim insurance but that usually requires a police report which you don't have. I get that you're trying to take accountability for riding aggressively on the street but regardless of if you are speeding or not it doesn't give someone the right to take you out.

Ill be looking forward to the thread about the guy in the gti is sueing for damages because you rearended him in a month.
the lesson you should have learned is always call the cops. you will most likely be paying out of pocket to fix your bike

Yes I will be paying out of pocket. One of my rules was that if I ever fucked up on my bike, it would come out of pocket as a lesson to myself. Only cellphone numbers were exchanged. I'll have pictures of the carnage later. Please ride safe out there and use your better judgment. I can't ride for a while until I get the bike all sorted out and I can't even play golf because I will be a little banged up for a while.

Glad you're OK, good stuff wearing your gear! I never go out without my gear, and I try my best not to screw around in traffic. Good lesson for everybody.

Yikes! Glad you came out relatively ok and the gear did its job....like you said, coulda been much worse. Anything special with those jeans? 100 foot slde and no road rash or worse? Jeans will disintegrate in a heartbeat. Way you landed, I guess.

Glad you are OK and thanks for reminding everyone why the need gear. I agree with Gixersixer that I would also call the police to file a police report. They are there to help us, really. When I was in a crash the police officer who came was a rider herself and understood my vantage point very well. Didn't hurt that she was kind of cute...8-)
