    Patched tires...

Who has rode them, what kind of riding, etc..

Anyone want my punctured new tire?

I asked somewhere "else" and I got some responses of people riding patched tires for track days and everything. (I didn't think that would pass tech inspection)

Yet no one seems to want to patch them and/or stand behind their work.

Every heard of a patched tire failing catastrophically?

Depends on the damage mostly. I know KB will take it if you don't want it. I've ridden the Deal's gap on a tire with two regular plugs and an internal patch/plug (the type you put in from the inside and pull out. And I ran through a set and a half of knee pucks on it.

It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?

    Patched tires...

I'll have to find out why GBM wouldn't patch it when I go pick it up tomorrow.

Dunlop has a long list of caveats & restrictions about patched tires, etc..

I'll have to see where it is, maybe it showed separation of the plies or something on the inside. Otherwise whatever it was, it was a small puncture that would seem to be an OK candidate for a patch.

Biggest negative is Dunlop says patched tires are never to be used at speeds in excess of 80mph. I'm sure they're just covering their ass but I'd probably rather give it to KB then think about the patch for 5000 miles.

You can do the correct internal plug + patch method?

My emergency kit is the kind you have to do from the outside, which everyone seems to think kills the tire.

    Dude her's what you do.

Go to autozone and by the Radial patches that go on the inside of the tire. Use a whizzer wheel with the scotchbrite attachment thing to clean the tops of cylinders where the head mounts, and scuff up the iside of the tire, put glue on, let dry, apply patch, put tire on and forget about it till you need a new one.

Or give the tire to me and I'll patch it and abuse it and do burnouts, skids, powerslides and stuff.

It's easy enough to do either, but I just use the ones that you put on from the outside.

I have put 80PSI in a patched tire and left it for days, no problem at all.

Nope, but I have heard of a tire blowing out, getting a puncture etc. How catastrophic do you want? A tire with a hole in it is a tire with a hole in it. I've probably had 10 of them in my life and I haven't crashed because of it yet.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that you already have a tire with a hole in it that you were presumably riding when it happened, what would be the difference with that happening on a patched tire?

    Patched tires...

I have ridden thousands and thousands of miles on plugged tires only once have I had a problem with a plugged tire, meaning only once have I had a plug that didn't hold... it held, but I had a separation in cords and a bubble developed

the only catostrophic plug failures I have heard of are "what if" stories frome people tho have no experience riding with a plugged tires

the most that can really happen if the plug failes is you will develop a leak, feel the tire going soft and you will pull over to investigate

don't let panic rule your life, ride with a plugged tire

don't waste money on patched you have to remove the tire to install a regular radial tire rope type plug iswhat you want

+100 to what RandyO said ...

Plug the bastid, check your pressure every day for a couple of weeks to see if it leaks and spank that bad boy!

    Patched tires...

I rode for three months on a new rear tire that had a plug on it. Started leaking eventually though, would lose 15-20 psi in two or three days. When I get back I'm just replacing it. I've ridden on a low air rear tire before and it was splashy as hell. I'd rather pay for everything to be tip top...

    Patched tires...

I've ridden one of KB's patched tires. 1k miles later the sides were shagged from twisties. No problems at all and I tend not to ride slow on my Rex.

If you don't feel like taking the tire off, get yourself some of the self vulcanizing braided plugs and do it yourself. I've had to use them every now and again and have never had a problem.

I even went drag racing with a plugged tire (dead center) and with multiple burnouts and passes it held up just fine. Even got another 1500 miles out of it before the tire died of natural causes. Never had to put air in it!

    Patched tires...

    Yup...
It's rare that I'm not riding with a plug (or plugs). No problems. I'd go the internal plug route. I imagine shops make a lot more selling a $200 tire and installing it for you than they would selling you a $4 patch. I'd be willing to believe that's the real motivation there and not liability, because I can't imagine any circumstance that would cause a properly installed internal plug to come loose. It's hard enough to yank the bugger through the hole to install it.

    Patched tires...

I got a small nail right smack in the middle of my rear tire, and had it patched a couple of weeks ago. I don't ride like a hooligan (or have more than 80hp) and the thing has been 100% perfect since.

    Patched tires...

There is no "make a sale" motivation here as they are not getting a tire sale out of me whether or not I patch/plug the current tire.

I already have another good rear tire so that's why the situation is a little odd.

    Thanks for all the input.

Let me know when I can grab the old one to smoke off!!!! Burnouts are cool. Almost cost me $50.00 at the track last sunday for a burnout.
