So in the off season i took off my foot pegs and exhaust to get some of the grime off and to get the left side peg off i had to remove the shifter. I put the shifter back on months ago and tightened it down good, or so i thought. I am sure we can all see where this is going...
I was pulling off 495 on to 110 in chelmsford and went to downshift only to find that my shifter was sitting on the kickstand! somehow the bolt had worked itself loose from the shift action and decided to escape. Long story short, had to flatbed it home.
Anyone know anywhere that would stock a pivot bolt for a honda VTR1000? everywhere online is 5-7day lead time
You don't need a torque wrench, you need...

I have one if you want to come up to NH.
During the service you might have forgotten to secure that one fastener and it took this long to fall apart... we've all done stuff like that, sometimes with bad results!
Glad for ya' it was a minor breakdown.
I'm old school, probably would have jury-rigged something to hobble back.
Did I mention I'm a cheap bastid!

couple twists of safety wire through those bolt holes would have done the trick to get you home...ps, blue loctite is your friend. or some silicone, anything to dampen the vibration so it doesn't back itself out, yet still makes the bolt removeable.

Close your eyes, look deep in your soul, step outside yourself and let your mind go.
why is it you didn't ride it home?
you could had put the bike in second gear and rode it home.
now if you lost your shifter and clutch lever at the same time it would had been tricky, but still nothing that would require a tow

The loctite is a good point but as far as the other stuff, it is a straight up threaded bolt that does not extend past the back of the shift plate. there are no fasteners and there is no way to lock wire the bolt. I do as a rule lockwire most of my fasteners but this one is different.
I was 20mi from home and the only real way to get back was RT3. If i could have gone back roads i would have but that was not really a viable option. Also i am geared kind of short so second gear does not get me very far. just opted for the side of caution and had a guy throw it on a truck
Way to limp wrist that bolt Sally.
With that out of the way I will say locktite that shit. I lost the bolt that holds my shift arm on at least twice before I put locktite on it. Mine luckily stays put though.

I can resist everything but Pete's mom.
I had the shifter pivot bolt fall out on my 250, after failing to torque it properly (or so I assume). As it happens, the mirror-to-mainstay-bracket bolt is of the same thread and sufficient length, although it lacks the shoulder-bolt aspect of the shifter pivot bolt and was enough to get me back on the road...wherein I was lucky enough to be able to ride back from whence I came and find the shifter pivot bolt on the road. That's one of the nice things about Vermont--little enough traffic that when you drop a bolt, you might even be able to go back and get it.
(I've also done that with an alternator bolt on a VW, but that's another story.)
