Trailer Bearings?

So.....

My trailer (12x7 enclosed) is a year old and has roughly 4000 miles, maybe less of use.

Do I need to do anything to the bearings? Truth be told, I don't know what that even means.....

But, I'm taking it to VIR sunday and I'd rather not have a problem!

Pull off the dust caps on both wheels and see if you have EXCESSIVE amounts of grease in there.

You will eventually need to repack them. I don't think 4000 miles is a whole bunch but it's good to check anyway.

Did you get your wiring straightened out?

I would be inclinded to grease them. IF you have bearing buddies I would pump a little grease in them. IF not I would have the bearings repacked. I do it every spring and check them before long trips.

bearings are cheap, it may be worth getting a spare....Just in case.

I would at least repack them before a long trip like that, just to be safe.

Takes about 15 minutes per side. This is important if you have small wheels on it and like to burn up the slab miles like I do....

I have not gotten the wire done. I was planning to do some investigating tomorrow morning on that issue.

I remember looking in the dust cap last year and it was all full of grease. I will check that in the morning too.

I just had a bearing failure on the highway. Thankfully, I was near Graham's house and we replaced them. I recommend buying Bearing Buddies or equivalent. I bought mine at Autozone for about 15.00. They pressurize the grease to keep air and water out, and you can visually see if you need to add more grease (by seeing if the spring-loaded inner cap is recessed). They have a grease nipple (he said nipple ) for easy maintenance. I wish I had done this years ago.

definelty maintain your trailer. i repack the bearings in my utility trailer every year. when i'm trailering the aprilia and the v max, i'm pulling about $35,000.00 worth of equipment-i dont want anything to happen with the $300.00 trailer! better to be safe than sorry.

2 Things

1. One ,any time you work on bearings be cleaner than a surgeon. No dirt or you will find out the hard way about premature bearing wear on the side of the road. Bearings are cheapper than the roadside breakdown..

One upgrade you can do for trailer hubs is to use double-lipped seals intended for boat trailers.

Another upgrade would be oil bath kits on the hubs. They have clear dust caps and are half filled with oil. It's extremely easy to see if everything is OK with those and there's no grease packing required so they are much less messy to maintain.
