But, if you want an engine that DOESN'T need the valves gone over every 6k miles, and want a bike that has BIG BALLS of torque, you don't want an air cooled Ducati 900.
RC-51's are great, if you can handle the seat, and riding position.
Aprilia's are expensive, and the way that company is going, I'd not go there especially if you are gonna be looking for parts.
Buell, 2007 technology, with a 1950's designed engine.
SV 650's, are the best bang for the buck...
SV1k's are cheap, but yet, so isn't it's suspension bits. With a little shopping on EBay, Gixxer shocks, and forks are a start to better riding.
The engines have a very linear torque curve, and are somewhat deceptive, on how fast they accelerate.
With a little work, and some more cash, you can build an SV1k that'll crank out over 130HP. Well, maybe when I say a little more cash, it's like another couple of grand.
TLR, it's again not what it is, but what it can be....Put them on a weight loss diet, a couple of tweeks, pipes etc., and if you get a jump on a Busa, or gixxer 1k it'll be a dragrace into the triple digits.
Christ, my TLR only weighs about 10 lbs more than the new Gixxer 1K, and makes more torque! Now if I can only rev the motor to 13 grand huh?
You can get into a used TLR for about 4 to 5 grand, but then again it's 1998 technology, they never changed anything right thru it's production life.
Ducati monsters are cool....same valve adjustment schedule, but are a little cheaper.....just stay away from the $R4$...
KTM Super Duke is new, so prices won't be down for a used one yet...
I guess it's whatever puts a smile on your face, and leaves you enough money in your pocket for gas.....
Too old to rock and roll, too young to die.
My battery melted on me at a stop light I guess. Dealer is picking it up this Saturday and fixing it. It's also had a stalling problem (much like most 1098's have had), that'll be fixed as well. I e-mailed Ducati , and my dealer (great bay duacti/triumpth in New Hampshire) a pretty nasty letter. They both called me within a few hours of the e-mail. Ducati North America was all apologetic and promised to have my bike back as soon as possible. Said they never heard of a problem with the battery before. Also said they are telling the dealer to do a full diagnostic on the bike and to go over it with a :Fine tooth comb". My guess is the tech at my dealer didn't tighten the battery connetion screw enough and it jiggled loose. Just a guess. I just put on a new clutch plate and clutch cover yesterday. I like the open cover look.

sounds to me you are trying to get orange juice out of an apple. no twin is gonna have the pep of a hi rev 600. twins arent about HP. there are some nice full fairing kits for the SVs, you are gonna be severly disappointed in the Buell and from what i gather the RC isnt all that comfy nor are the 7s or 9s in the Duc line.

this is far from nakkid![]()
Like you mentioned... most people think my bike is broken. Usually, they come up to me and ask me if I'm ok and if my bike is going to make it home alright.
I just put in a brand new clutch because my stock one was getting too loud... the basket was pretty notched up. I do have a vented cover though... so the new clutch still sings.

i guess my reply wasnt too clear as i didnt mean to place the v twin bikes into the same characteristics as a 600. i understand its a whole different power band and such. i dont mind the comfort factor of a sport bike, as i ride a cbr now and have adjusted my riding position to stay comfortable on it. i have a chance to ride my friends sv650 so i guess ill take it out for a spin and see how i like it. i have only heard good things about it, but not too keen on its looks. just curious as to why you dislike the buell? cant really get any un biased opinions from anyone, they either love it or hate it. guess i gotta ride one to find out.
i was actually cruising the sv riders forums to read up on the sv and i found out you could get fairings for it. only thing i didnt like was how on a stock bike you can see the front pipe just kind of dangle there.
are the ducs and rc 51 that much more uncomfortable compared to other sport bikes?
thanks for the line up. the super duke is way cool, but kind of pricey. not really trying to run down busas and liter bikes but would be nice to keep pace with other 600s on track days and with my buddies. not really in a horse power arms race, just a nice burbly hard pulling twin
a ninja250/500 in capable hands will run circles around any 600/750/1000, so keep that it mind.
oh and your cbr's riding position is like heaven compared to duc 9xx/7xx and rc's.

that's exactly what you need to do to find out, test ride. tell them to set the suspension to your weight (nice chart in the manual, 5min job) and check the idle (1050RPM is best. not 900. 2sec job when warm)... these two minor things can make or break a test ride. i can't stand the HD shops but the 12 is a fun bike. you'll know right away if you're in the 'love or hate' group.
if you can get over the old-skool motor (also means simple maintenance) the bike works. its aimed at street duty but plenty of people run them on tracks too.
Beta 200RR
The RC riding position leaves a bit to be desired. If I ride without my leathers Im lucky to make 50 miles without feeling sore. With my leathers I can go all day. Its a fun bike and I have a blast with it. Some people pick on it because its a bit overweight and not as fast as the new stuff but its more then fast enough to get street riding done.
As for the V-twin sound. Well I love it. Heres a video of me taking it out at Loudon for a track day. MySpace Videos: Clean lap around NHIS by James
the guys saying that the bikes are uncomfortable, how big are you? like height and weight wise. i know my taller cousin is uncomfortable on some of the newer 600s
My 916 is a torture rack.

Im ok with the riding position. Its all been adjusted to what I like. The seat itself is like a sheet of plywood. On my bike since all the suspension has been done you wont be able to touch the ground very easily when youre stopped so stopping on a hill can be a challenge. The size of the bike goes away when its in motion.
gotcha, just one more thing to consider i guess. if only money grew on trees....
let me start by saying what an awesome bike the Buell Firebolts are. everything has been well thought out on that bike. (i have experience with them). lots of GREAT ideas on it, some of which i wish other companies would incorporate into their bikes. gas in the frame, oil in the swing arm, great front suspension, and THOSE BRAKESthere are no wheel spacers to fumble with, i think they look great, and they handle well...BUT... the motor SUCKS! i shouldnt say that. the motor in it will pull your arms off. the problem is that it revs to 5k, so with that power and the poor transmission gearing before the bike gets a chance to pull your arms off its time to shift. it pulls like freight train all the way to redline but redline comes in about 2 seconds. you wack the throttle and then your on the limiter. it almost needs a 8 speed gearbox. so if you like shifting. i mean really like shifting up and down all the time then by all means get one. with all the inginuity Eric Buell put into that bike i wish he made his own motor too. the V Rod motor is WAAY too big for that bike in actual dimension so it would never work. its a sportier sportster. simple as that.
