Coming off of an RC-51 to a 600cc machine I get the feeling you maybe a bit underwhelmed. I know I was when I would ride my friends machines.

Every Jap superbike has more torque almost everywhere but especially over 3500 rpm
We don't stay at twins rpm's cause there is another 50 HP right on top
Yes a liter twin has more torque then a 600 inline.
If you want the power buy the power
1000 cc or bigger inline.

Its quite possible. I got the ride the zx-14 about a month ago and I was underwelmed by that thing as well. I know the 600 will not have the same output as the rc but Im looking at something a bit more civilized for the street. Hopefully I can find someone with one that will let me take it for a spin before I make the purchase.Quote:

Underwelmed by a ZX-14? Are you sure all the plug wires were installed? Power wise the 14 is in an entirely different league then the RC-51 so I'm not sure how it was underwelming.Quote:

Maybe you should check out an SV650. I've seen one that consistently beat an RC-51 up at New England Dragway :D

Plus the power is metered out delibrately to the maximum dry traction.
The only way to really tell is numbers or a roll on with someone in the power band

Power is tamed through 3rd gear at lower RPMs by the use of secondary butterfly valves in the throttle bodies. The computer effectively prevents WOT by modulating the air going into the engine. It is clearly something that was added because of the Kawasaki lawyers not wanting inexperienced riders looping the bike. My aprilia made 68lb feet of torque at 3200 RPM and max HP of 114 stock at 9800 RPM max torque was 74lbs. (all at the rear wheel.) I have yet to see a 1000 CC Machine post those numbers for torque so low. The new Mille's are posting 80lb feet of twist at 6500 RPM with 143 HP.
Keep in mind the bike was 2000. 5 Try and find a comparable 4cyl machine. I had waaaay more twist than any GSXR 750, or ZX-9 for that matter.
The ZX10 (according to sport rider) is pushing out 81 lb feet at 8500 RPM. This is the leading 4 cyl machine for HP and torque. It has 166 HP at 12000 RPM.
I agree the 4 cyl machines have more top end HP but for point and shoot riding, you'll be hard pressed to beat a twin. Not to mention the italian twins (and jap twins) sound better than any 4 cylinder could ever hope to. :twofinger...to that I say good day sir!

All the twins i've riden are pigs, though KB's hawk is comfortable. i prefer inlines. I also preffer two smoke dirtbikes. I don't like to klunk down the street, I like to scream.
I'll be the first to admit that my Mille was a heavy handed tank. It came in wet (according to the scales in the garage at NHIS) at 468. Full fuel, oil and street plastics. I'm guessing 450 in race trim.
They are not as flickable as the 4cyl machines but they are a lot of fun to ride. I look at the 4 cyl machines as scalpels that slice through the track and the twins as tanks that blast their way around.
I'm curious, how do the twins slide? They have more consistant power so at a traction loss I would think that would be good, but at the same time lower RPM's so less gyroscopic.
4 bangers are like riding automatics
They slide ok. The front is kind of a slow wallow (on my bike it was anyway) the tend to underster a bit. Its predictable and tractable. The back is very easy to control with throttle input.
I used to spin the rear up on my bike going up 3-4 and again outta 6 pretty consistenly. Not like a smoldering, blistering spin but enough to feel the back end twitch and leave a nice lil mark on the pavement.
I found the gyroscopic force to be greater on the twins vs the 4 cyl machines. I think it is due to the heavy crank and much heavier pistons moving counter to one another.
Edit: If by gyroscopic you mean getting the bike to turn in? As a whole they tend to require a bit more physical input. i.e. Bar input as well as leg input when pushing on the pegs to get the bike to rotate underneath you.
That is not exactly true. Any vehicle's peak acceleration is found at its peak power output, not its peak torque output. All other things being equal, a higher powered vehicle will be quicker than a less powerful one.Quote:

In a motorcycle, I-4 engines produce significantly more power for any given displacement then the twin counter part. This is due to a number of reasons including combustion efficiency and engine balance. As a result, you will be hard pressed to find a twin that can out run an equivalent sized I-4.

Does it really matter? They both have their places. I personally have always preferred the twin, I own two. Sure, the I4 will make more power. Put a better rider on a twin and he'll walk away from the I4 everywhere but the highway.

I have a Superhawk and my girl has a cbr600rr.
I have never been underwhelmed by her bike. If anything I want to sell my bike and get a newish 600. The new bikes are just silly.
Or keep it just to have a v-twin around to rip some nice wheelies and use around the yard to tow trailers and pull stumps out.

Matter of fact, I want one of each. I nice CBR1000RR and an RC51. There that will take care of it. Or maybe a Aprilia RSV and an MV Agusta 1000F4...yeah...the second one.
