so on my drive to work this morning when I was getting off the highway I noticed a change in the way my bike sounded. I got to work, got off my bike, left it idling and thought it sounded a whole lot louder and a deeper tone that typical. fast forward to getting back on the bike. still sounds weird, go put gas in it, get some cash, etc. check the fluid levels, everything seems ok, but I get on the highway and there are two distinct sounds comin from my bike that I've not heard before.... so I call keith and he is on his way to picking me and the bike up in his truck.... am I dumb for not riding it home?

not dumb, just paranoid.

Better safe than sorry....
do exhausts do that?? break in? because yeah I have an aftermarket exhaust, but I've ridden it for about a month now and it just now sounds different. it hadled fine, but I don't know enough to know if something might be wrong...
Yes, exhausts "break in"
The excess fiberglass packing in the muffler blows out and breaks down a small amount over time and heat cycling. Typically the exhaust tone gets deeper but it's certainly not "all of a sudden".
yeah, I posted this thread before I knew what was wrong.
Maybe you have an exhaust leak?

Ok so the truth is it was the freeze plug in the exhaust where the O2 sensor normally goes. Like i said there was a freeze plug spot welded to the exhaust and somehow, i think, just normal heat cycles helped the welds give way.
It was an obnoxious sound, and when she was on the highway it whistled adding to the noise.
I told her and keep telling her that she made the right call by having me pick her up, because even though it is a new bike it could have been something worse.
I am proud of the fact that she could at least identify that something was wrong and not just keep riding it cuz it still ran.
Yeah but Keith, there are two schools of thought on this:
1--> Ride more. Worry less.
2--> Light it on fire, collect insurance, get a Yamaha
I commend newgixxerchic for not continuing to ride the thing regardless of the relatively minor issue. Better to be safe than sorry.
exactly. too bad she says the same about suzuki's
hows the fjr? pick it up yet?
No FJR yet....soon.
Flying to Tampa on the 21st and then taking my sweet ass time riding back.
6 days to ride the Great Smoky Mtns, Blue Ridge and a mini-tour of DC.
I'm pretty amped about the whole thing! Managed to get hooked up with some folks that are local to Deal's Gap. Just from talking to these folks, I'm starting to realize the Dragon isn't really "all that", what, with all the "enforcement" going on...a buzz kill if you ask me.
good luck brotha, sounds like a fucking sick ride, you SOB i am sure thats gonna be nothing on that new touring boat your getting there.
i am sure you can find just as good a roads around NE that do the trick.......
you keeping the FZ or did, are, you getting rid of it?
By "NE" you mean "Nebraska"?
I can tell you right now there isn't much in this area road-wise that compares to that region in the south.
I made a thread for this ride and I'll link a video so you can see what I mean.
Keep in mind that what you'll see is just a few miles of many hundreds of miles of roads that are available.
The FZ is staying with me.
If you have the time, there are some roads in Georia that are as good as the Dragon with no traffic and no cops. I'm in Florida for the winters and everyone from down here used to do the Dragon and now go to the Blood Mountain area (Wolf Gap) in north GA. It is on the way to Deal's Gap.
Blood Mountain 129 and 180 were my favs, and also the path through Suches RT 60.

thanks guys. i just wasn't sure if i was being overly paranoid or not, turns out there was something wrong, although not damaging, it still gives me a better feeling about knowing when something is off...
And, it's in the works to getting it fixed. Thanks to my wonderful bf who takes apart my exhaust during his workday even though it means he'll have to work super duper late tonight... Thanks babe.
