Thinking of getting back into the game with a Vmax. Whose had them and what should I look out for? Seems there are some pretty solid deals on '86 models.
Go for a '94+ for better brakes and suspension.
There is no power difference between the '86 to 2k's models.

Aim for one that has not been modded. Mods on a Vmax typically means it's been beat. Then expect 2nd gear issues.
Clean ones are a bit hard to find, but it can be done. I found mine and it was bone stock, low mileage (for it's year). I don't ride it much, but I don't think I could ever find another that clean and unmolested.

I wanted one for years...finally got one and hated it. Sold it after a few months. Depends what and how you like to ride. Fast in a straight line it was super fun, but trying to turn it sucked.
*Disclaimer: not a cruiser guy*
It's not a sport bike. Don't buy one thinking it will be one.
The motor is a thing of beauty. When it gets into Vboost, there is not much out there like it.

VBoost - Yamaha undersized the carbs but tries to mask it by adding complexity afterwards and slapping a label on it.
Everyone else - Proper sized carbs, no wait for the 'boost' to kick in 'cause you've already got the power.
Yeah, I was a Sabre/Magna guy.![]()

Thanks guys. Just looking for something comfortable to ride, and I've always loved the styling of the vmax. Not looking for anything fast or nimble, as I have my car for that.
I figured with such an aged bike I'm looking at repairs regardless so I wouldn't be opposed to mods on it as it's something I'd likely be doing anyhow.
I have mine just for cruising. Works well for that.

Put quite a few miles on a friends 89. Just wanted something to cruise on, but when you're on the highway and want to move it'll do it. Only thing he ever complained about with it was getting the carbs synched.
Also, just so you're not as disappointed as my friends and I were, the butterfly flap things on the sides do not open.
The air scoops?
They are just covers for plumbing/electrical.
Carb sync on mine was easier than an inline 4. You can do nearly the entire job without taking anything apart. It's pretty easy.
It's a fast, powerful cruiser. It doesn't handle well. It brakes fine if you put good pads and lines on fresh calipers.

It's weird. Even in the middle of summer, I hit an ice patch for the first three gears when leaving an intersection by my house.
Maybe the bike is just happy to see me. Starts wagging it's tail.
