I did a 230 ride today through MA/NH/VT and on my way up into NH I took rt 78 through Warwick MA. They just paved up there and it is a really nice road. Just before the center of town there is a cemetary and as I took what was luckly a lazy turn down into the center of town I turned the corner doing about +20 and about 150 feet in front of my in the smack dab in the middle of the road is a big ass black bear. It looked at me, got startled and ran back to the side it was coming from. I was on my Gixxer with the high beam on- that could have been what saved my ass since the high beam light is brighted. As passed it I made sure it kept going into the woods.
I have encountered deer on the side of the road and lots of wild turkeys but this was a first for me. Had I hit that thing I would have probably pissed it off and if I was still conscience it probably wold have come over and finished taking my head off.
I was, of course, in full gear.
Other then that the day was perfect. Just thought I would share-. Be wary of rt 78 in Warwick MA as there are bears up there.
wow thats scary we were there just yesterday too, friend whipped out on some gravel on the side.

wow i feel the love in this place let me tell ya
The bear woulda been more afraid of you than you think. I've stood under a tree with one about 12 feet above me on a branch. It stood there looking down at me, after people took pics I backed up and bang on the ground it was, black blur heading away from us at break neck speed.
The other day, on my way to meet Mr Bread and Freak, I saw mother deer with a skipper in the road. She's raising her kid right.
Woulda made a nice rug in front of the fire place. Maybe next time...
Or you coulda mounted its head with a plaque that read "Yogi's Boo Boo"
Good thing he bear-ly missed him.
I like 78

Yea 78 is nice, nicely paved too so smooth.
Always interesting stuff when you head North! We should ride again!
That's fine. I'll just grin and bear it.
I didn't realize that paved the road I just knew they were doing bridge work out there, I always go through Tully to get to Warwick. I liked 78 even before it was paved, pavement wasn't terrible.
My first bear encounter on a bike was on Rt 122 in New Salem, one week after I busted my front fender on a deer's arse
Well, that's just great. You hear that, Ed? Bears. Now you're putting the whole station in jeopardy.
To add to the above interesting, weirdness, here's some more:
People think pissing in the woods scares deer away. In the fall, the boy deer tears up the ground then pisses down his hind leg over his tarsal gland and (as nasty as it is) this attracts girl deers.
Find a scrape on the ground and piss in it (if you're a guy)...boy deer will circle down wind of his scrape (sooner or later) and smell the air to "check" it from a distance. When he smells the testosterone in your piss he'll think someone is intruding in his turf after his women and he'll be in seek and destroy mode.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
or *click* if you're one of those anti-hunter nature types with a camera.
***disclaimer...get the hell away from a deers scrape after pissing in it, but still within rifle range. Deers have killed more humans than any other game animals in north america, including brown, black and polar bears...combined.
