Since you recognize the bike and you roughly know his habits I would say it was probably the best course of action. Let us know how it turns out.

Your an ass if you did nothing, your also an ass if you take the key and leave a note.
In a lose lose situation like this, you did the right thing. There's not enough people out there looking out for one other.

If the guy is that much of a dick about it, then just tell him you left the key in his glove. Toss it on the ground near his bike the next day.

Oh NESR, you never cease to amaze me with your dickishness.

Seriously guys? He's going to get in trouble? We should all be so lucky as to have someone look out for us if we forget our key in our bike (I do it A LOT).

    I agree here...

He could have ran in quick and just left the keys in it. Now he has to go through this whole thing of calling you and getting the key back. Caused him kind of a pain in the ass....

I leave my key in my bike all the time if Im just running into a store...Id be pissed to find a note with my key gone.

Also NESR, your problem with reading comprehension never fails to amaze me

THE BIKE WAS IN A COMMUTER PARKING AREA.

THE OP HAS SEEN THE BIKE PARKED THERE NUMEROUS TIMES.

THE PARKING PLACE IS ENOUGH OUT OF THE WAY THAT THE PERSON WASN'T JUST RUNNING INTO THE STORE.

    Bunch of morons.

Never mind reading comprehension, how about looking at the picture as well?

This thread was posted hours ago, yet people still think he might have "Just run to the store".

I'd be pissed if someone took my key out of my ignition thinking he/she was doing me a favor

Maybe he did run into store, then he came out and couldnt find his key or the dumbass that took it out of the ignition where he knew he left so he took a cab home to get the spare.

    Re: What would you do?

What I would do in your case is also contact the state police and provide them with your name, cell number and the plate number of the bike. You never know they might have the guys employer on file and be able to get you in touch with the person sooner than EOD today.

I will also stand ground and say you did the right thing. Sure if it was my bike and some stranger took my key and left a note I would be grateful but not everyone would be I guess. I know I'd rather have a missing key until 5pm than a missing bike forever, I just went through a stolen bike and it is not fun. Breaks your heart more than it pisses ya off

There are certainly other possible scenarios. Given the rest of the setup, that's not the most likely one though. I guess we're back to reading comprehension then....
