If the guy is a dick he might be able to pursue a claim of theft for taking the key, but it would be a stretch and the guy would have to be a really big jerk to even go down that road. Stranger things have happened though.

Since you recognize the bike and you roughly know his habits I would say it was probably the best course of action. Let us know how it turns out.

If the guy is that much of a dick about it, then just tell him you left the key in his glove. Toss it on the ground near his bike the next day.

He could have ran in quick and just left the keys in it. Now he has to go through this whole thing of calling you and getting the key back. Caused him kind of a pain in the ass....

Maybe he did run into store, then he came out and couldnt find his key or the dumbass that took it out of the ignition where he knew he left so he took a cab home to get the spare.

What I would do in your case is also contact the state police and provide them with your name, cell number and the plate number of the bike. You never know they might have the guys employer on file and be able to get you in touch with the person sooner than EOD today.

I will also stand ground and say you did the right thing. Sure if it was my bike and some stranger took my key and left a note I would be grateful but not everyone would be I guess. I know I'd rather have a missing key until 5pm than a missing bike forever, I just went through a stolen bike and it is not fun. Breaks your heart more than it pisses ya off

There are certainly other possible scenarios. Given the rest of the setup, that's not the most likely one though. I guess we're back to reading comprehension then....
