Is this worth putting back together?

Let's say I have most of the rest of the parts at my house to put this thing together.

Notice the broken engine case. (Paging Tricky Mike)

Opinions on the cylinder scoring? I'd say it looks normal/ acceptable.

I can get the shortblock you see pictured on the c-h-e-a-p! Let's call it "under $200". The catch is, it's in Cali so shipping might be the deal breaker.

I don't normally do this but, whaddya all think?

Re: Is this worth putting back together?

While searching for a replacement crankshaft I found a whole 600RR motor (that actually runs) for $227 on Fleabay, so some really good deals are out there. That thing's kind of a basket case.
Having said that, I could weld/machine that hole away, It wouldn't be the prettiest thing, but I'd be more concerned about what kind of havoc ensued when the hole was created. What else in there is farked as a result?

Replacing the shortblock could be a pain in the ass with trying to get the crank oil clearance right.

Is that the motor out of your 600? How did the case get cracked?

I'm not worried about the actual build with regards to using Plastigauge, etc. I have reasonable enough knowledge to accurately complete a build.

My thing is, $150 plus shipping is what this guys wants for it. It came up as part of my search for a transmission. He was going to pull just the trans from this motor and send it for.........you guessed it, $150 plus shipping. Wasn't sure if I should go for the whole thing based on the parts that are still good....jugs, clutch basket, crank, etc or possibly just build this up from parts I already have.

I have a complete engine from an F4 (in boxes) at my house so I could feasibly split the cases on this one and go from there. Only issue is I'm not completely sure if the fitment of the gearbox from this engine would fit into the cases I currently have at the moment.

In theory I have everything to put this thing back together. The only variable is (which I will have to research a bit more) how many of the F4 parts can transfer over to this motor? I have a complete valvetrain, head cover, engine covers...........I just had a thought as I was typing, the injectors might be an issue. Again, gotta research it a bit more.

No sir. It was cracked when the seller lowsided the bike. That's the story I got anyway.

hey i have a much better deal for you. 2003 600rr long block ~5000 miles that runs the only problem is there is a crack on the case that drips oil while running. u can come take it out of my garage for 300 cash

degsy and i took it out of my bike couple months ago, he may remember some details if u ask him.

    ^^

Thank you for the offer but I don't think the two engines are interchangeable.

    So, Tricky, pass you think?

Re: Is this worth putting back together?

I dunno... It doesn't look *that* bad, but it seems like it's not the greatest deal... I'm also a little skeptical about the lowside explanation... If that's the case why is the pulse rotor fucked? maybe that chunk broke loose and wedged itself in there while everything was still spinning causing the damage. But it looks like there's a pretty decent ding on the inside of the case in addition to the hole. Possible that something within the motor came loose, wedged itself in there and created that hole from the inside out?

I dunno, Trick. From the way the casting fractured along the left edge of the hole in that pic above, it looks like it got punched from the outside in.

Re: Is this worth putting back together?

yeah, I was looking at that too, Pete... It also seems that if something got wedged in there to enough of an extent to blow a big hole in the case the rotor would be in worse shape than it is...

Re: Is this worth putting back together?

yeah... my guess is it got punched from the outside in, and as it was coming in, the pulse rotor (i guess that's what it's called ) caught it with that one bent tooth... but that tooth is chewed up on both sides.... weird.

? arent we talking about a 600rr motor? i believe 2003-2006 are same and the only diff is the wiring harness.

Did the guy lowside directly onto a piece of 3/4" square cold rolled steel or something?

good call on passing...seems like there could be more there than you bargained for..
