look what I did...last night...
I hope it works to reduce the excess heat pouring out
the side of my bike !
Wont get to ride it today but I'll report on it later.
I may have to look into doing this myself. My legs feel like they are get roasted when I'm at red lights. How much do the pipes need to be wrapped?

If you look down, you go down. That may be fun at an orgy, but it sucks on a bike
Well I've got of tape left.
I just wrapped the section of pipe that goes down from under the seat to right rear set....
If it helps with the heat near my leg I'm happy.
I've got a 600RR and its pretty toasty on the right side.
My muffler is carbon fibre so it a pretty good insulator its hardly ever too hot to touch. I'd wrap more for the horsepower gain.. but "I just wanna ride" !
Like the kid on the Yamaha commercial !
keep in mind that the immediate area's that you've wrapped are not gonna be as hot, but since your leaving other sections of the pipe unwrapped those sections will be even more hot compared to before so keep an eye out on sections near your fairings.
I initially only did the pipes by my foot on the duc and ended up scorching a small section of my fairing on the front cylinder. The bolts that held my cf heatsheilds also got warm enough to melt the inner "ankle" area on my sidi's.

keeps the under side of my legs from cooking on the r1
you can put all the tape on you like, but once the subframe comes up to a cooking temperature there's not much you can do.

That would work in an ideal situation, but riding to work and around town I will have to stop. Although ppl have mentioned after market Y-pipes or gutting the cat reduces the heat generated. Sorry if I am jacking your thread akira700.Originally posted by sandman

gutting the cat wont help the heat.Originally posted by sxlova07

imho, the only thing that would help is some sort of insulator between your legs and the subframe.
maybe a carbon fiber cover?
once it heat's up it's it's only going to get hotter.

well... on my commute to work this am about 25 minutes in stop and go street stuff... the area near my right leg was warm but nowhere near as hot as it got before. In fact the plastic secondary shield (black one) was not hot at all.
Overall I'm happy with the time spent.
I'll have to keep an eye out in the other areas...wouldn't want my baby to melt !
But my intuition would say that by wrapping the more rearward end of the pipe... and thereby allowing the exhaust gases to escape more freely directly out the back of the can, that the pipe area toward the header would not get any hotter that it already was....
If anything it would reduce heat, no ?
but maybe when the ignition is turned off... its possible that usually the heat would spread and dissapate over the whole pipe and now it'lll only have the unwrapped areas to escape from...
BTW what's gutting the cat?
silly underseat exhaust fad.![]()
