Is it just me or does this BMW run as fast as a 15 year old stock ZX-11 which is also half the price of the BMW? What bikes did they compare it against? The 12R, 10R, Busa, and K5 can all easily reach and stay at their 186mph limiter.
What is a partially streamlined bike? Is it a class designed for BMW? The 12R and Busa are what the K1200S was designed to compete with and both will bounce off their rev limiter in 6th gear at around 195mph for the entire mile while in completely stock trim (but unrestricted).
Anyhoo, here is the article.

K1200S Sets New World Land Speed Record

my only guesses would be true radar mph vs indicated and salt flats vs pavment![]()

It has carbs. The others you mention have FI.
I don't know about the Zrex, she's in a class by herself!
I see your point though, maybe I could go to Utah and set a land speed record for an 04 gix 750 that arrived in a blue Avalanche.![]()

I think the key thing is whether the other bikes you mentioned are set up correctly stock to hold >173mph non stop for a full mile, turn around, and do it again in the other direction stock. It's not the same thing as hitting the top speed on the highway and then slowing down. If the other bikes lose stability at those speeds on the salt the better motor isn't going to help you much. The speeds reached on the salt flats seem to be quite a bit lower then what magazines claim and what owners claim based on indicated numbers.
That said all you need to do to try is take your ZX-12 down to the salt flats and give it a try.
I wish people would stop comparing the BMW to the ZX-12/Busa. Those bikes are upsized supersports. The BMW is a Sport-tourer, kind of a VFR/Sprint/Duc ST on steroids. I'd definitely buy a K1200 over the Japanese bikes in that class in a heartbeat. I bet I wouldn't make a single mod to the Bimmer and I'd want to go nuts on the ZX-12 or Busa to make it the bike I want. It's kind of hysterical cause ZX-12/Busa owners definitely come across as threatened by the existence of the BMW.
The the K1200S is direct competition to the 12R, Busa and Blackbird. Look at the ergonomics and engine style. It is a super sport and can be used for sport touring in the same sense that a 12R can be used for it as well. The K1200GT is more of a true sport tourer.
I overlooked the salt flat part of it where traction could be an issue but the 12R and Busa will do back to back miles at the 186MPH soft limiter and when derestricted, they will both run back to back miles in the mid 190s in stock trim. There are many tests to back that up.
My understanding is the ergos are more upright on the K1200S? I haven't sat on all of them but I'll have to check em all out. I've only seen 2 K1200s so far, one on the road and one behind glass.
But otherwise - these are major differences that put it squarely in the "More touring oriented" category IMO.
- Subframe designed to carry bags, factory bags
edit: - ABS!
- Shaft drive
- The funky suspension
- All the funky options like the heated grips stock, etc..
Some of these mean you are going to spend more time & money modding the ZX-12 & Busa to really make them competitive for taking a week long trip, etc.. you can just hop on the BMW and go, although it's bags are supposedly on the small side.
The subframe is a biggie IMO - if you want good hardbags on the ZX-12/Busa you are going aftermarket, probably ugly, probably not as well integrated, possible subframe fatigue issues (Busa already had subframe problems without even attaching bags), possible aerodynamic problems. I'm not sure what is available but things like the Corbin beetle bags are hideous.
I am really guessing the only reason we don't hear about the ZX-12 and Busa at the salt flats is no one has bothered to go try it.
The record that was broken is an FIM record, and the FIM rules disqualify all the current crop of Japanesse hpyerbikes.
"The front of fairing cannot extend further forward than the vertical line through the center of the front axle"
The SCTA record (which would include the K bike in the same class) is held by a Busa at well over 200 mph.
BMW R1200GS
I have ridden the k1200s. It wouldn't even keep up with a gsxr1000. You can just forget about comparing the speed of it to a 12r or a busa. Not only does a hayabusa make more power, I seem to recall that Suzuki went to great lengths, and a lot of windtunnel testing to make sure the busa had a superior aerodynamic package.
The k1200s is not carbuerated
Busa's have definitely been to the salt.

Well in overall performance none of these bikes hold a candle to the GSX-R or any of the other literbikes or even the 600s.. they are too big.
But all the big bikes are definitely better for real world riding and/or sport-touring use.
Pretty darn interesting that the BMW has the shorter front overhang on the nose. It might account for huge part of the difference in top end speed.
ZX-12's aren't that fast. i saw a guy who couldn't get any faster than mid 130mph at epping.![]()

Aerodynamics can suck my balls! That's why you duck down and put an arm around the tank! Psshhh, and I thought you guys knew about motorcycles.....

The trick here is that they used the FIM as the sanctioning body. WIth a little research I found this.
http://www.landracing.com/records/maxton/motorecs3.htm
The US landspeed events are notsanctioned by the FIM. I think BMW pulled a bit of a fast one for some good marketing. Someone should see what the FIM requires to set the record and set the bar a little bit higher.

I'd believe the same thing.
I bet they designed the overhang on the nose to purposely get them inside that rule to be in a different class then the Busa/ZX-12 for marketing.
And the stupid thing is not only does it make the bike slower (who cares) but it probably hurts highway fuel economy.
Remember how huge the nose was on the triumph that got axed that was supposed to piss all over the 200mph barrier... it was huge.

i think i seen that same guy lol
It speaks volumes as to how powerful and quick the bike is since the pilot really didn't know what he was doing.Originally posted by bump909

Busas hold pretty much all the titles for top speed on non-stream lined motorcycles because they have better aerodynamics than the other sport bike and are easier to get big power out of than the other bikes(12R's are hard to turbo charge because of the airbox/frame design).

i was just breakin balls. he's still a good 20mph faster than my bike.
Those times were mine! Having never drag raced before, my best was 10.7 @ 134mph and it was all I could do to keep the front end down. The bike is 100% stock with a normal swingarm and the front end was not strapped.Originally posted by busa413

As I get better at launching which is where all of my trouble is, I hope to run low 10s in the mid 140's.
The bike can run in the 9's but I doubt it will in stock form with someone as heavy as I am running it.
change gearing by 15 percent
Get a strap and compress the front end except like 1 inch
Preload the f out of the rear
run low 20's psi in rear tires
Launch with full throttle and feather clutch
short shift 1st by 2000 and 2nd by 1000 most motors rev faster then tachs so reading are off
in to the nines
