on your car if you use full synthetic, how soon do you change it again? 3k, 4k, 5k, etc. i usually change around 3k.
i notice the silver cap mobile1 synthetic said 10,000 miles and the gold cap, extended synthetic, said 15,000 $5.99/qt. do you think it's safe to change at half of that? 7,500miles? would save a lot.
i just found out Autozone carries Mobile1 MX4T bike oil for $7.99 per. im sure this the same type available at MC dealer and goes for $12. what a rip-off.
"fuckit!"
I use Mobile 1 full synth (silver cap), and I change it every 5K. The way I look at it is every 3 oil changes its like getting 2 free ones. Plus, i would rather err on the side of caution. Cars and engines are too damn expensive.
From what I have read the synth stuff holds up better, but you should still not push it too far. My mechanic said I could go 7K with the oil I use, but he would advise against much over that.

this study:
http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/s.../oil-life.html
seems promising..but they haven't posted updates since february.
However the oil interval calculation methods they provide ( http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/s.../interval.html ) are definitely worth looking at.
Hope that helps...
damn confusing.
it's probably like asking "how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop?"

I use mobil1 with the silver cap and i change it every 6k. The oil never comes out much more dirty looking than when i put it in. Mobil1 is a dark oil to begin with. When i was using regular oil, i would change it every 3k miles and i always used a good name brand oil. It cost me the same money to change my oil once every 6k with mobil1 as it does if i change it twice with dyno oil, and it one less time i have to climb under there to change it and that much less oil i have to dispose of![]()

Short rides? Lots of traffic? 3 liters or less capacity? Change cheap oil often. It gets dirty quicker than it breaks down.
Know what a rev limiter kicking in feels like? Do long stints with lotsa high revs, consecutive days? Better oil lasts longer.
The old "red cap" Mobil1 15W50 used to be hyped by riders because it was the last batch to be badged as enviro-friendly.
Many people run car oil w/o any trouble. Good for them.

Before Tammy and I bought the Trailblazer, we looked at used BMW's.
Both the 330Xi and 530I we drove had 15,000 miles oil change intervals. This blew me away as being wayyyyy to long.
What kind of oil does BMW use to warrant that kind of mileage??

good point on same cost Mark but sometimes it just goes over 1-2k miles when you make a point to change at 3k miles. if you use synthetic you don't sweat it.

i have used only mobile1 synthetic on my previous VR4 and changed every 4k-5k miles. one day it spun the rod at around 150,000 miles.cost me a new engine.

i'v heard about it before now that you mention it. thanks.Originally posted by ChR1s
