I had tried to sell teh xr400 a while back on craigs list.
some guy from england wanted to buy it. sounded like one of those scammer things, but i was bored at work so i humored myself and exchanged emails with the guy. i told him a high price and he thought nothing of it. I told him i would not ship it, he had to deal with it, and he was fine with that too.
So we went back and forth through x-mas maybe and then he stopped emailing me. so i forgot abou tit.
til this past weekend when a hand adressed envelope full of money orders showed up... summing to a total of about $1k more than we agreed to for the price of the bike.
Who is willing to bet they are fake?
to be continued....

More than one m/o in the envelope?, and 1g more than you negotiated, lol....Take em to the bank let them sort it out and guard your bike with a shotgun...I wouldnt like the idea of having them so close to my toyz............
p.s as you can tell my $$$ is on FAKE...
hmmmm..... I say call the cops or a Lawyer first, see who you should talk to about it & see if they want you to cash em or submit them to be investigated...
I've read/heard stories about people getting checks or m.o.'s, cashing them, they clear, the item gets shipped & the money orders get revoked later for some weird reason.

In order to get a money order or bank check, you have to put the money up front (cash) otherwise they will tell you to take a hike. That means regardless of what the other guy is doing, you shouldn't have anything to fear by cashing them.
If for some reason the bank wants you to have an account to back them up, go to a bank you don't use and open a new checking account with $20. Then cash your money orders with that bank. Once you have the cash, how is the bank going to get the money back should the money orders be canceled if you only have $20 in your account?
Just make sure to get the cash first before releasing the bike. If you have to put it into your account until it clears, do that but don't let the bike go. Wait until you can withdraw all the funds as cash and then let the bike go.
"Beware if you have been overpaid for an item you are selling by cashier's check or postal money order and have been instructed to return the overpayment amount to the buyer or other party via money transfer. Cashier's checks and postal money orders can take up to a month to fully clear. If the payment turns out to be fraudulent, you could be held responsible for the entire amount withdrawn from your bank."

Correct me if I am wrong but if you open an account with $20 and the money orders turn out to be fake, couldn't that account become overdrawn and then you will be hit with fees and possibly bad credit?
Do NOT cash them. I've heard stories of similar incidents. The checks end up being forged, but it takes about 2-4 weeks for that to surface. Then you get a pleasent call from the FBI telling you that you've been had - but, if you cash it, they'll demand the money back, because technically it would have been YOU who cashed the fraudulant checks, NOT the guy who sent them to you.
The guy's strategy may also be to ask you to send him a check for the difference of what he overpaid past the initial agreement. Then you give him your real money and get stuck with fake checks.
Have you ever read the somethingawful writeup about some the scammer? You should do something similar with this guy... if he's from England - look up what town it said on the address where he wants the bike shipped.
Then write him an e-mail about something like "Hey, as a chance of luck, I have to take a business trip to Yourtown, England! Why don't we meet in person to finish the deal... etc." See how he responds![]()
Gee oreo_n2 I bet you didn't even know what a scammer was huh?
If he cashes the check believing they are legit he is not going to be charged with a crime , but they will take the money back. It does take about a month to find out if they are fraudulent. I would cash them and make the scammer wait for a month or even 2 just to be sure. I would even tell him I never recieved them and make him send me another payment. That would buy you more time.
ZX-12R If he opened a new bank account he is still liable for the money even if there is only $20 in the account. I don't know how long it's been since you opened a bank account but they take your drivers license and social security number before you get an account. It also would be fraud on his part if he tried to decieve the bank.
Like Pete says your best bet is tell the bank or you could even call the FBI. Especially if he has to send someone or come collect the bike himself.

You suck at life. Why don't you quit?
My dad told me I could be anything I wanted when I grew up. So I became an Asshole.
I said to hold onto the bike until everything has cleared. Once the money order clears, there is nothing fraudulent about withdrawing all of your cash. Waiting until funds clear is a standard business practice so it can not hurt you to cash them then wait and see.
Or simply call the bank or organization that sourced the money orders to check their validity.
I say you roll a big, fat spliff with the money orders, light them up, then have someone take a picture of you. Then, mail the pics to whatever address the scamming fucktard gives you.
P.S. - I'll give you $1200 for Ashley.![]()
the money orders are in deed fake.
i contacted the money order company and they think they were stolen.
so i sent notice to the fbi via that IC3 thing from the bear fucker.
i am trying to figure out a way to screw with the bad man some more, but my junk mail filter deleted all his emails due to their age?!?! D'OH!
I guess its game over.
and highsider... i'll keep her for that much. if i sell ashley, i'll have to take the yz450 out for future dirt endeavours and i am sure the first crash i have will cost me more than that to repair. so its financially in my best interested to tell you to eff off!!! hahahahahaha![]()
