I'll be going up the week before, during the week of the 4th. Big Shirl decided to climb back on the pillion seat this year & this is a must for our staycation this year...

I'm not one for long-term forecasts, but fuck me. The weather goons are calling for the same old, same old next week. I'm not averse to riding in the rain, but they simply won't let bikes up the mountain in the rain. In some instances they won't even let cages up n the rain. Keeping a close eye on this...

They reluctantly let us up one year on the bikes during questionable weather. The base made a few calls to the summit and they finally let us up. On the way up, it quickly turned to near zero visibility. It was downright shitty by the time we hit the summit. Cold, windy, rainy & unbelievably shitty most of the ride up & down. It was brutal. When we were inside warming up, one of the staff there noticed us and told us we were the last allowed up on bikes, likely for the weekend. About the time we hit West Side Road, the weather was absolutely beautiful. Sunny & hot the rest of the ride home.

I rode up to the summit of Mt. Mitchell in NC, it was like that, just a short spur off BRP, weather changed from partly cloudy 80° to soaking wet 50° in the clouds barely see the tail lights 50ft in front of you if that far

Sooo...I didn't make it up last week like I was hoping. The only couple decent days we had weather-wise was spent out of town all together. When *I* hit the mountain this year, it'll be a last minute "I decided to take today off to go up the mountain today" type thing. With the weather the way it's been, I'm not counting on a particular stretch of nice weather where we can layout a decent plan.

Weather looks to be pretty iffy as of right now .
At least we have a 2 night stand with Dave Matthews at night .

I remember coming down off in hellacious wx one year. Could barely see the tailight of the bike right in front. That was "fun" in the dirt. Lot of willpower not to touch the brakes.

It's looking like some day in the next couple weeks could be the magic day. Couple decent looking days this week and a few nice looking days on the long term. Although let's face it - long term forecasts around here have been pretty inaccurate at best.
Either way, I'm doing it sometime between now and the end of next week. Unfortunately it's going to be a last minute thing where I decide the night before to take the day off and go for it, so I doubt I'll be doing a "group" ride for it this year. It'll even likely be a morning-of decision. I which case there's really not many of you that could meet me around 9:00am on a moment's notice for it.
I'll still give a shout out when it happens though, just in case anyone's in the general area and up for it. And I promise to post pics.

Sorry gang, I've let you down...
As expected, the last minute Rock Pile ride happened yesterday with very little notice & fanfare. The plan was to get daughter #2 moved back to UNH yesterday. After packing her truck and getting everything ready to go, she gave us the hugs & let us know when she'd be coming home to get the rest of her stuff. We were obviously a bit confused. Her & her roommates basically had plans to meet for early check-in, then all help one another move in. So we were basically free for the rest of the day.
So on a whim, we called some semi-retired friends of ours and told them we were heading up to do it. Met up an hour later and we were off. We got a bit of a late start, but traffic was minimal and the weather was great at the summit. It's amazing how quickly it starts getting chilly now and daylight is shrinking. We got home around 8:00pm, but the ride as a whole was awesome. Due to the low traffic we were able to take the main route(s) there & back. A few stops along the way to stretch out, take pics, blah-blah-blah, then up & down the mountain.
It was the first time for the couple that came with. Both his passenger & mine said they'd never do it again. LOL! I don't get it, the mountain is such a cool ride.

Always next year for another shot at a group ride up .
John boy and I are now looking for a good day to take the ATV’s.
TIMMYDUCK
We've done it twice on ATV's. We did it back when you could only do it on ATV days. Now you can make reservations and do it just about any time. But back when they only had two ATV days, it sucked. Not a good time at all other than the fact that we were riding them up Mount Washington.
We saw a good deal of SxS's on the run up the other day. Not sure how they classify those, but I'm guessing it's the same as reserving an ATV spot for a particular day.
