The amount of squids that are attracted to this road is probably the reason why I most likely wont go there. Its just too unpredictable and impossible to figure out what some people are thinking while on their bike. Maybe they should have an event each year where you pay a couple of dollars to get a nice run on the road. Having to pay money has a nice effect of keeping the unwanteds out. I belong to a RC51 group where its 20 dollars to have a lifetime membership. Its enough to keep the unwanteds out since they can get the info they are looking for, for free. Its a nice little haven for us.
Don't let those stories keep you from going. In my 6 weeks down there I have never received a ticket or anything else on the Dragon.
Besides, Deal's is about 5% of the riding we do down there. The rest is the lesser known roads.
During the week it's pretty easy going at the Gap. During weekends is when it's a clusterfuck and the LEO's are up there to keep people alive.
Our Wednesday night runs are probably my favorite. Watching the sun set at the lookout, no cars come by for 20 minutes straight, no bikes, nothing. Then the real fun begins, the Dragon night run

Once again, doesn't matter. We were there during "Operation Dragon's Tail" or whatever last time. Had a good chat with the cops riding BMW's, they told us what the situation was. Nice guys trying to keep people alive down there.
In the off chance I get a ticket this year, I'd rather it be down at Deal's enjoying riding the twisties than up here on the highway on my way to work. You choose.

I am about 95% sure I can make the mid Sept trip. Depends on when or if I travel to a job scheduled to start in Sept????

Clay is right, you will not spend much time on the dragon as the other roads and day trips are much more exciting then the dragon itself. The end of the day runs on the dragon are great and usually after 6 there are no police.
BTW, the dragon in a thunderstorm at night is great fun when you are on DOT's!
I heart the dragon at night in a thunderstorm.
And yeah the Dragon is a stop you make while riding the "other" roads down there.

riding the dragon in a violent thunderstorm in the dark of night requires more technical skills than manyriders have, I think most people here would be chicken
deals gap is only base camp, the good riding is everything withing a 200 miles radius with the exception of the roads in the national park that are ruined with excessive cage traffic

That was by far the craziest ride i have evr been on. It was nice when the lightning lit up the dragon for a second or two so you could see!!!

In six years and seven trips I only got one $75 ticket during tourist season. & The cop was vey cool. It was a Ranger and he only fined us for an illegal pass. So no points incured! He said in a slow season they wouldn't have bothered us at all..
We barely ever see cops on our roads trips. Olny on the weekend on the Dragon, and that is when we just hang out there and not rip it up. We rip te Dragon a few times during the week when there are not many people or cars around. There have never been cops there then!!!!!!
My chances of going just got better!!!
I can even go in May now if anyone wants...

Ok guys, lets see what we can find for a week that works for most everyone.
Unfortunately Labor Day is out for me. And since I'm the trip Führer, that means that week is a no-no.
Recommendations?
I'll call Ron once we get some possible weeks.

All look good for me.
Labor Day weekend is also a race weekend. Another reason why we can't go then.
I just called Ron again and left another message. We'll see what he says for availability.

Wow that would be fun..
This year might not be so good for me but I should know in the next month or so. For now count me out but if I can work it out I will
Not to threadjack but the SV's have a rally going on the second weekend
of June. It is at the same time as the FZ1 people. I will be down there for
two weeks.
I may be moving down there permantly if this second interview pans out.
That road don't look like you have to do quite 50 MPH to really enjoy it..
