I spent last Friday and Saturday sliding and crashing a TTR at the fairground at Harrington, Delaware. The camp was in a show horse ring, like an oversize hockey rink with dirt and mud and maybe a bit of horse shit instead of ice. What a f*in blast!
The first day was a bunch of exercises in a small oval, drilling mostly on body position. That took a while because it's mostly opposite of track body position - ass on the outside of the saddle, inside leg hanging behind the bars but not too far back (or your knee could go POP! if you fall), sit upright way up on the tank, slouching like a stoned teenager, rolling your shoulders forward and back to adjust weight on the rear tire as needed. And just when you start getting comfortable sliding the bike a little they wet the track, turning it to grease. Everyone's on little dirt bikes going 20mph falling down running each over getting covered in mud. It was insanely fun, but we did eventually lose a couple of students - to a badly sprained ankle and a knee POP! That reinforced the importance of body position...
The second day they make a bigger 'TT' track with more exercises in the morning and most of the afternoon practicing. They had a headphone set that the instructors used to provide feedback during the practice sessions and that helped a lot. The instructors were all excellent - including 7-time GNC champ and world's fastest motorcyclist Chris Carr. That guy can ride.
Check it out if you get the chance. It's a great time. I'm definitely going back.
