CABIRIA at TT The Bear's This Sunday

Same drill...We're playing at TT the Bears in Cambridge on Sunday night. I'm pretty sure it's 21+. check out the website at www.cabiriamusic.com if you want to hear a couple of sample tracks. We're recording an album now, so they are a bit dated, but you get the general idea. Hope to see you there!

    wowa...you're playing violin? COOL....

Is it something expensive for a child to learn? I mean, lessons wise, instrument buying, etc.?

depends on the level of committment....you could probably find lessons for $40-50 an hour (that is probably the low end - I charged that much when I taught in High School), and get a starter violin for $300-400. Of course, then when they start getting better, there's conservatories, better teachers, and violins that can get up into the tens of thousands of dollars...but you don't have to get that carried away. It's time consuming for the parent too. I would VERY STRONGLY recommend music of some form in your child's life though. It opened doors for me that led to some pretty amazing experiences.
I can point you in the right direction if you're interested...

Well, actually, my youngest daughter Kellie, has a REALLY nice voice, she is only 5 yrs old. It amaze me how she can sing all kind of songs, without being out of tune (off key?), she sing the same tone as when she hear the song. We've been listening to the Phantom of the Opera soundtrack lately, in the car mostly, and she love the songs, and believe me, if she knew all the words, it would be awsome. She keep humming (spelling?) the songs. Can you believe I don't even get tired of listening to a 5 yrs old singing?

By the way, I'd never could afford to pay $40/hour or higher for any music lessons... This is very sad, because I know my daughter has a talent for singing. I put them in taekwondo instead...

Good for self esteem.... I took Kendo and Capoeira for awhile (not at the same time). I wish I could go back and take Capoeira - I loved it. But my back can't take that nonsense anymore after the accident. Boo!
Hey, Nazo takes Taekwondo. I bet your 5 yr old could kick his ass though.

    And for Jay....
I used to play that thar same fiddle thing
obviously, I mean by that statement, how could anyone doubt you?

She's going up (well both my daughters) to orange belt by the end of this month. Like my Man God say "they get their belts in a crackerjack box". They have "graduation" belt testing every month. As long as you have a minimum of 8 stripes on your belt, meaning you went to 8 classes during the month, you are eligible to go up the next color. WTF....you should earn your next belt rank, because you can perform the movements without help. Oh well...they say that they are all suppose to earn their black belt in a matter of 2 years. If I remember right, when I was young, it would take a LOT longer to earn a black belt in ANY martial art. Guess times have changed. I think when they get their black belt over at that school, I'm gonna put them in a more "old fashion" school, maybe Kungfu or something, so they learn to fight and kick asses. So when they get to their teenage years, they can defend themselves against psychos...

A lot of the Martial Arts schools have added more belts than the Traditional Styles. This to help promote self confidence and a sense of achievement. Although it still takes about the same amount of time to get to to a true black belt.

Well the way I see it is that for now, they are having fun and learning the basics. I do not consider that this school will teach them real defense techniques. Most of the classes are for children, they also have an after school program, which make me think someone might have been right when they told me some martial arts schools are making a living mostly out of babysitting services for parents than actual real, traditionnal martial arts to learn defense/fighting.

at the risk of offending everyone on this bulletin board...

I think it's just cause Americans (in general) are too impatient and (in general) not disciplined enough to hang in for the real belt promotions.

Not too much has changed in the Asian cultures on belt promotions. i.e. people here would not be advancing at the same rate there.

I mean, my mom's from Hong Kong....and she is freakin HARDCORE.

I'm not saying anyone in particular is undisciplined or not talented...I'm just talking about the general trend. And I am definitely not excluded either. I change my mind every 5 minutes.

You know...like Mexican food tastes better in Mexico...that kind of thing.

mexican food in mexico sucks. I prefer the imported mexicans at anna's tacoria. They do a good job.

And all that martial arts junk is straight up smoke and mirrors. I've layed out a kid that was "master" at jujitsue or some BS like that, and my ex who was a 10 year karate student couldnt' fight her way out of a wet paperbag.

And on top off all that, i did so play the violin. I even did a big solo concert in 6th grade where i wore a suit coat over a turtleneck because I saw Will Smith do it on the fresh prince of bel air, therefore making it the cool thing at the time.

AND furthermore, maybe I might just go to your show and get all drunk! so THERE!

Erin, you're mom is from Hong Kong? I didn't notice you had asian physical attributes on your pic?

I would agree to that also. And my turn to risk to offend someone in here, but when I am looking for martial arts schools, I am also looking for asian masters. I feel more comfortable having someone teaching a martial art from where they came from. Taekwondo came from Korea. A lot of them were "born" with martial arts in their blood (figure of speech), it's like a second nature to them. Martial arts is a way of life for them, not a competition or "look at me, I can beat your ass" kind of thing. My daughter's master was born and raised in Korea, and you can see he is good at what he's doing, but I think his potential for teaching is minimized when 90% of his students are all little kids between the ages of 3 and 15...with classes of sometimes 30 kids and up at once. I'd say a good deal of them will not stay long enough to get to a black belt.
