I’m in the early early stages of planning a Baja trip and seeing if anyone locally has had the pleasure of doing such.
Not sure which bike it’ll be on. Possibly setup the WR I have for some more dessert rally trim with plush suspenders and some navigation towers or grab an already setup 690 or 890/790 twin.
Would love to camp where possible but mostly just rip the dessert and some dunes. I just saw a guided tour that’s going in April of this year but won’t make that timeline with classes and such.
Trip is going to be spring/fall of 2024 most likely.
Very cool.
Sylwia and I met a great young guy on our adventure in Alaska back in September who recently made his way all the way down to Baja. He started riding in Prince Edward Island.... we met him in fekkin Alaska... and he's now in Baja... the whole time just livin the dream riding around on his KLR doing exactly what you're planning on doing (just camping wherever) but for as long as he possibly can. He's been on the road living like a nomad for close to a year now, I think.
Hope we all see each other again one day. Such a great and inspiring young dude. It's been fun following along on his adventure.
Here's his latest insta post if you want a little tiny taste of what you're in for:

Dammit. He might have his account set to private, probably have to follow him. https://www.instagram.com/patpiercedoyle/
He's no spam bot, so anyone would be fine clicking the follow button. He's waayyyyyy off grid a lot though so rarely checks in.
The other guy Sylwia and I met and immediately had a bond with is this German guy named Carston. He's currently circumnavigating the entire fekking world. https://www.instagram.com/tramp_justice/. We met, had some pie in Tok, Alaska and decided to team up for a bit. We ended up riding and camping out together for 5 days. Such a fascinating and inspiring dude. He's definitely getting invited to our wedding.![]()

One of the guys at our local club raced it years ago. The sleep deprived training he did was pretty nuts.

Been going the past few years in April with the dual sport and typically stay in hostels or hotels. The group usually stays for a week but depending on my schedule I can only pull off 3 or 4 days and just ride back over the border solo. Will be headed back first week in April again this year.
I also ride down occasionally with the ADV but more road-focused, either for the day or a long weekend, sometimes 2-up.
Edit: Here's the baja highlight video I made from 2021

I’m really hoping to do a Baja trip before I get *too* old, unfortunately don’t think it’ll happen within the next two years, young kids, etc… Good luck with your trip!

My buddies did it.... it was farking awesome.
One buddy his quads locked up. fatigued so bad he couldnt sit down without help.
if you want I can put you in touch with them. They were on a guided tour. One thing they told me was to choose the correct guide.... to avoid pavement./ packed sand 70% of the time. You want the real Baja experience not the novice, sofa couch version.
I've been wanting to do it for a bit as well..
Get an NESR trip going....
hmmmm......
A friend's father from RI won the 60+ class a couple times in the mid 2000's, along with his teammates. Quite a change from tight New England enduros but he took right to it.
