hope the other guy (black cbr) is alright. steve, is that the guy you got your track bike from?

Ya, i felt bad for the guy he was a good guy too. It was his first ride with NESR. When i bought the bike from him he said he had heard of NESR from his roomate. I said he should go on the ride to meet some new people and he said thats why he joined and planned on going. He sounded all excited for the ride and the party. He had just bought CBR1000 from his roomate and really could not afford it. He bought it anyway and figured he would sell the CBR600 to help pay for the thing. He said his Farther didn't know about the purchase and would kill him if he found out. I'll bet he regrets buying it now... I sent him a PM and he hasn't written back yet...i hope hes ok.

I'm yet to be on a ride where the sweeper actually does the intersection detail like (s)he should do.

What this means is that at an intersection where the pack might get split, (s)he will move up to the intersection and BLOCKS traffic so no one gets between bikes.

Of course, this is hard to do with a 20+ bike group when a traffic signal might last 30-45 seconds.

I'm not a big fan of that move personally. Even though I have attempted it a few times for other riders. Last group nesr ride I was on, Cheese went out to block some cars and that truck got all mad and swerved around him while everyone was pulling out of the gas station.

I remember that well. The truck was only on the road for a few miles before he turned off.

I'm very surprised this didn't happen before Gene road away. He said he crashed the second time because of lose triple clamps that should have been one of the top things to check before letting him ride. Then the fact that he road home alone is no good also.after both crashes

Any way I hope your ok Gene, now take it to the track and pick up some pointers before you fix all the road stuff so it don't matter if you crash at the track

I'm used to a different kind of sweeper I guess. The sweepers I ride with just sweep....one bike stops, the sweeper stops...blocking the intersection gets cagers pissed and, unless you're on an organised benefit ride of some kind, LEO gives a ticket for blocking. That's why I mentioned having more than one leader. If the pack does get split (and it typically does) then another leader steps up and continues on the intended route to the next waypoint. Ususally there are two groups that form...fast and slow...multiple leaders help in these cases. Regrouping at certain waypoints is another way to keep everyone together.

I'm not saying it's 100% fool-proof but it makes a notable difference in pack communication and flow.

The group rides I've been on rarely have major stoplights or intersections. It's mostly upstate NY, W. Mass and parts of VT where a large group can comfortably cruise along with realative ease.

yeah, I'm typically not a fan of blocking intersections. Some situations it's necessary, but for the most part it's the leader's responsibility to keep an eye in his mirrors and make sure everyone made it through. If they didn't just pull over for a minute or so till they get the green.

Yeah, in that particular example I think I actually think I put you guys in worse danger cause the pick-up truck driver was pissed at me blocking the road and probably used most of his attention watching me instead of all the bikes pulling out ahead.

Blocking intersections works better on charity rides with cruisers. They don't mind being passed while a "road guard" moves to the front of the pack to block and intersection. Try to move up in line in a sport bike crowd and you're likely to start a race!

Sometimes it works even better if every rider keeps track of the rider behind them. If the guy behind them disappears, they slow down and wait. Eventually this trickles forward until the leader is riding alone and realizes it's time for him to slow down or turn around. Of course in the twisties, the mirror check can wait till the good section is over.

That's what I asked in the beginning when my group got formed (and also waiting for everyone at the next road change)...guess everyone forgot about this simple "rule" in the heat of the moment when they hit those nice twisties...LOL Otherwise, rarely do anyone get lost if "everyone" follow this simple method.

problem w/ that is, when you've got 37 friggin bikes it'll take 50 miles before the leader picks up on the fact that something's happened.

    GROUPS OF 10
The original group was of 35 bikes, I counted twice. Then AndyC added later on (36 bikes). We divided that big group into two smaller groups before leaving in the morning, yours and mine. I think I might have had a little more riders than on your group...not sure. Still, it was making 2 fairly big groups. I do agree it was still too many riders on each group. 3 groups would have been best. Plus, that ride was way too long, too many variables could happen, etc. next time, shorter ride, not as far, and either less riders or smaller groups. I get it.

    It's part of the flow.

I disagree with packs of 10....then your "50 miles" turns into 100

Fast group and slow group. It would be increasingly difficult to manage more than the two riding types, IMO.
