Third best road you've never heard of: Route 108

    Jalopnik.

    3.) Vermont Route 108

    Suggested By: Defender90

Why it's the road to Nirvana: Where there is skiing there is mountains, and it follows that there are mountain roads, as well. Stowe deserves more credit as a a warm-weather jumpoff point for a different kind of seasonal high-speed thrill ride. The rest of the fine state of Vermont is a two-lane paradise that takes its small scale seriously; Interstates only recently intruded here.

Hah, apparently nobody at Jalopnik has ever tried to drive 108. It's absolutely inundated with tourists all summer long, the fastest you can ever get through there is about 15mph, and even if you get a straight shot with no traffic, there are always sightseers and hikers lining both sides of the road.

I've been through there 3-4 times, and never gotten a good high-speed run.

    The other Route 108?!

    http://g.co/maps/spcp8

Seriously though, my 108 is not a bad local ride. I use that stretch to get home from work a lot. Nobody uses that road around 4-5PM compared. Beats the 'slab at least.

I am a fan of most of the Northern Kingdom

I usually take a weekend to zoom around.

Either the group weekends are over or they are double secret probation rides and I'm not on the list.

I've heard of it...but called it Smugglers Notch!!!

Great place to do a little 'bouldering' at the top!

Look at the username of the person who submitted it: "Defender90".

That person probably has zero interest in the type of roads most of us like... which explains this suggestion. 108 is "okay" for me, but there are about a hundred better ones within 50 miles of it.

I dropped a tag out there in the VT tag-o-rama thread. Said road is about 15 mins from where I use to live and it got repaved top to bottom a few years ago. As a result, this here road is better than VT-17 IMO. But like most, there's very little room for mistakes, and out near the middle to the northern 2/3rds of it (Kettle Pond area), there's a lot of horse riding in the summer months. As well as campers / trailers dragging gravel into some of the corners. But even in the summer the state forest isn't nearly the tourist attraction as 108.

ps. if you ride 108 from Stowe to Jefferson, hit 109 after and head northeast. That's a pretty slick road as well.

+10. It's 5 miles from my house. The fresh pavement was great last year, however the winter beats it up quickly, the frost heaves persist all year. It was unrideable 2 years ago unless you're talking dual sport.

Rt. 232 is mostly through Groton State Forest, 4 campgrounds on that good stretch. Pretty close to NH also! DO IT!

I saw that. Had just bought the bike last summer and wasn't quite ready. This year is different.

I was thinking either Arcadia or VT. For various reasons the missus has helped me rule out Arcadia.

I live on 108. In the countless times I've ridden through the notch I think maybe 2 or 3 times I wasn't stuck behind a Honda Odyssey. It's gorgeous in there but certainly not a great road to ride. As for 232, couldn't agree more.

Ever try 8a heading North to Rt 100 from RT2 near Charlemont? Fun if you like goat paths (I do). Camping Ride? I'd be in.

I'd love to try a camping ride, but summer gets tight with NHMS stuff and whatnot.
